I understood that marble statues were once painted, but I had no idea they had such life like eyes. I try and learn something every day, and today I've learnt something. Thank you x

wow i had no idea. even with an “AP” art history class in high school (ooh la la), we never even discussed this difference in depicting a statue’s eyes. thanks for the extra lesson james :)

I saw this post right before a trip to Athens, and I managed to see some of these statues in person. Looking at them, I felt so aware of the life that once existed in all the eyeless Greek statues. Thanks for this post!

I am lucky enough to have seen quite a few of these and know how powerful the eyes can be.

I have always longed to paint the eyes on photo illustrations of Greek and Roman art!! Your article is deeply satisfying.

I find them disturbing, maybe because as you say they look alive. For the ancient Greeks this was a positive, but for me it is a bit unsettling, like something that shouldn’t look so ‘real’.

Molto interessante questo articolo. Gli occhi sono lo specchio dell'anima e i greci che avevano una cultura spirituale molto profonda lo sapevano bene!
