Fascinating appreciation for the smallest of details.

This was like a detective story...so interesting. I especially enjoyed the patron in the shoulder of one of the figures, the example of pentimento. That was very clear to see. Thank you for bringing all this to our attention!

Thanks for this !

Caravaggio is one of my favorite artists though I have studied almost nothing beyond an art history course in college decades ago

Your article prompted me to buy the Dixon bio to learn more

Perfect homework assignment before our trip to Rome in December!

Fantastic read!

I agree with Margaret, this was like a detective story.

I'm totally jealous of all those people who get to spend countless hours looking and uncovering these details.

Loved this. One of my favoerite things about Caravaggio's paintings is the meaning of the fruit in the fruit baskets, especially in the supper of Emmaus. You could write a whole post on the symbolism of that basket alone. Was one of my favorite things when i was in art school 💗

What I learned: “multi spectral reflectography” an “infrared technique, and “pentimento” is Italian for “repentance”. Beautiful post to read and to learn of such a greatly talented artist.

In addition to museums, there are several Caravaggios throughout Rome…mostly in various churches. Makes a worthy activity to find them while in Rome!

Years ago, when I went to college, I took an art history class as an elective. The class was conducted by viewing sides projected on a screen, which is a magnificent way to view art. It was in this class that I first saw works by Caravaggio. I have never forgotten that experience. I could not fathom how anyone could paint with such breathtaking realism. Thank you for this wonderful article.
