Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.

Something I have always found interesting about paintings is how easy it is to forget that there was a human being behind them. Maybe it is because they can seem almost too beautiful to be real, as if they came from somewhere supernatural. But every artwork hanging in every museum in the world was made by a real person, on a real day, in the middle of a real life, a life with money troubles, love affairs, grief, ambition and fear.

Each canvas is a page torn from that diary Picasso talked about. We just rarely read it that way, because the painting does not let us. It shows us the beauty and keeps the story to itself…

There is a word that captures precisely what this is about. When we reveal something, we are reaching, without realizing it, for the Latin revelare, built from re, “back,” and velare, “to veil.” To reveal, at its root, means to draw back the veil, to lift the covering off a thing and show what was always underneath. And that is exactly what a painting is: a surface, a veil of paint, with something hidden behind it.

You have almost certainly seen every one of the 5 paintings ahead, but behind each is a true story most people have never heard. And in many cases, the story leads back to the same place: the artist. Picasso understood this better than anyone, and something else he once said gets to the heart of what follows:

Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.

1. The Golden Woman Whose Name Was Stolen

Let’s start with her. You have seen her before, I’m sure of it, but you have probably never been told her story: a woman stands wrapped in a shimmering cascade of gold, her pale face floating above a jewelled choker, the whole surface so encrusted with real gold and silver leaf that it seems a mosaic more than a painting…

Gustav Klimt made it in Vienna in 1907, at the height of his powers, and he worked over it like nothing else he ever did, producing more preparatory drawings for this one portrait than for any other canvas of his career. The woman was Adele Bloch-Bauer, the elegant, intellectual wife of a wealthy sugar magnate, and she and her husband were central figures in the cultural elite that made Vienna, in those years, one of the most brilliant cities on earth.

Some have always believed that Klimt and Adele were more than painter and subject, and that all that obsessive gold was, in part, a portrait of his own feeling for her. Adele died young, of meningitis, in 1925. And because of that early death, she was spared what came next…

In 1938 the Nazis marched into Austria, and the Bloch-Bauer family, like most Jewish families in the country, was stripped of everything it owned. Their home was looted, and their art collection, including five paintings by Klimt, was seized. Adele’s husband fled the country with almost nothing and died in exile, believing the portrait of his wife was lost forever.

The painting was too beautiful to hide away, so the Nazis hung it in a Vienna museum for all of Austria to admire. They simply stripped the title “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer” off the frame, because the name was Jewish, and renamed her Woman in Gold. For the next sixty years, one of the most beloved paintings in the country hung there as an anonymous golden stranger, advertised proudly as “the Austrian Mona Lisa,” while the real woman and her name were scrubbed out of the story as though they had never existed.

But there was one person left who remembered her. Adele’s niece, Maria Altmann, had escaped to the United States as a young woman, and in 2000, in her eighties, she decided to fight. She sued the Republic of Austria to get her aunt back. It was very nearly hopeless: a refugee widow against a national government, over a painting the whole country now considered part of its soul. The battle went on for years, all the way to the United States Supreme Court. And she won. In 2006 the golden portrait was returned to the family it had been taken from almost seventy years before.

The Neue Galerie in New York, which is now home to the painting, describes its journey as a remarkable story of “perseverance and justice.”

For decades she had hung there in her gold, admired by everyone and known to no one. Then someone refused to let that be the end of it. And that is what all five of these paintings are underneath the beauty everyone can see: not mere objects, but people, with names that can be taken and, sometimes, given back…

2. What Paris Saw That We No Longer Can

In 1884, a young painter in Paris made one small decision with his brush, certain it would make him famous overnight.

It did the opposite: within days it had destroyed the woman in the painting, and before long it would drive him out of the country too.

Looking at it now, you would never guess what all the fuss was about, and that is because the offending detail is no longer there. He painted over it. But when this portrait was first unveiled, it was so scandalous that a mother watched her daughter’s life fall apart in a single afternoon, and the woman herself would spend years unable to bear the sight of her own face.

So what did he do? The answer is hiding in plain sight. And once you see it, you will not believe it caused all of this…

Grown men wept in front of the bare wall. The investigation got so desperate the police even questioned Picasso. And when she finally turned up in a Florence hotel room in 1913, something strange had happened: the theft had turned her into a worldwide sensation overnight.

There is a line from John Ruskin for this:

Great nations write their autobiographies in three manuscripts: the book of their deeds, the book of their words, and the book of their art.

When you stand in a museum, you are reading that third book, the one a civilization writes in paint: the record of how people saw the world, and what they felt about being alive in it. So when a painting is stolen, it is not like losing money or jewels, things that can be replaced or made again. It is a page ripped out of that book. And once it is gone, no one can write it back.

We like to think the masterpieces are safe, behind glass and guards, waiting for us whenever we please. But even now, they are nowhere near as safe as we think. In October 2025, in broad daylight, thieves propped a lift against the Louvre, cut through a window, and were gone in under eight minutes with a fortune in French crown jewels. The most famous museum in the world, robbed in the middle of the morning. And the jewels, apart from Empress Eugénie’s crown, which the thieves dropped as they fled, have never been seen again…

The Mona Lisa came home, but most never do.

What follows are 5 of the most beautiful lost paintings in history: some were stolen, and may still be out there somewhere, in a vault or a criminal’s back room, waiting to be found. Others are never coming back. As Ruskin said, to restore what has been destroyed is “as impossible as to raise the dead.” So look closely at each of these. You are looking at something most people will never see again, and, in at least one case, at something no one will ever see again...

1. The Storm on the Sea of Galilee (1633)

It is St Patrick’s night in Boston, 1990, and the city is loud and distracted. At 1:24 in the morning, a car pulls up beside the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and two men in police uniforms press the buzzer, saying they are responding to a disturbance. The guard breaks protocol and lets them in. Minutes later both night guards are handcuffed and duct-taped in the basement, and one of the thieves says, almost politely, “Gentlemen, this is a robbery.”

They are inside for eighty-one minutes. They leave with thirteen works of art, and the greatest of them is this one:

It is one of my favorite paintings of all time, and like everyone my age, i have never had the chance to stand in front of it…

A small fishing boat is being torn apart by a black sea. The mast strains, the sail has ripped, and a wave has crashed over the bow, tipping the whole vessel onto its side. Above, the sky is a wall of storm broken by a single shaft of light. The boat is crowded with panicking men: some haul on the ropes, some clutch the rigging, one is being sick over the side, and at the stern, the rest turn to Christ, begging him to save them. It is the moment from the Gospel of Mark, seconds before he stands and tells the wind to stop. Rembrandt painted it in 1633, at twenty-seven, newly arrived in Amsterdam and out to prove what he could do. He never painted the open sea again. It is the only seascape he ever made.

Now do something with me: count the disciples. There should be twelve. Look again, and you’ll find thirteen. The extra man, gripping a rope with one hand and clutching his hat with the other, is the only one who has turned away from the storm. He is not watching the wave, or reaching for Christ. He is staring straight out of the painting, directly at you. That face is Rembrandt’s own. He put himself in the boat, in the middle of the terror, staring out of the canvas across four centuries at whoever happens to be standing in front of it. Which is the cruelty of what happened next: the thieves took a knife and cut the canvas out of its frame, and the rest of us have not laid eyes on it since…

The theft remains the largest property crime in history, and it has never been solved. The FBI has said it believes it knows who did it, and still, thirty-six years on, no-one has been arrested and not one of the thirteen works has come home. And the thought that some collector, some billionaire, some heir to a banking fortune, may be sitting in a private room at this very moment looking at this painting, while the rest of us cannot, is enough to make my blood boil.

In the Dutch Room, where it hung, the Gardner keeps the frame on the wall exactly where it always was, empty, ragged at the edges where the canvas was cut away. The museum has explained why: they hang there, it says, “as symbols of hope awaiting their return.”

So the frame waits, and Rembrandt waits somewhere out there, still gripping his cap, still looking out of the storm at a world that is no longer allowed to look back…

2. The Concert (c. 1664)

They took this one the same night, from the same museum, and it may be the single most valuable object ever stolen in the history of the world.

It could not be more different from the Rembrandt beside which it hung. Where that painting is all noise and terror, this one is perfectly still. Three people are making music in a sunlit room: a young woman seated at a harpsichord, a man with his back half-turned to us playing a lute, and a woman standing between them, singing, one hand raised to keep the time. Light comes in from the left, the way it always does with Vermeer, and falls across the tiled floor, the instruments, and the pale wall. Nothing is happening, and everything is. It is an ordinary afternoon of people absorbed in something beautiful together, so hushed that you feel you are intruding just by looking.

To understand why this is the most painful loss of them all, you have to know how few of these exist: Vermeer worked slowly, and died young and in debt, and in his entire life he painted fewer than 50 pictures. Of those, only about thirty-four survive anywhere on earth. Thirty-four artworks, spread across the great museums of the world, are all that remains of one of the most extraordinary painters in the history of art. When The Concert was cut from its frame in Boston, thirty-four Vermeers became thirty-three.

And we know exactly what it is worth: somewhere around a quarter of a billion dollars, more than any stolen object ever recorded. But money was never the point of it. It is a painting about people sharing something beautiful in a room together, and it now sits alone in the dark, wherever it is, its music silent for over thirty years. Its empty frame still hangs in the Dutch Room, waiting. That is the real theft: a moment of shared joy locked away where no one can join it…

3. Nativity with St Francis and St Lawrence (1609)

The first two were stolen by people who seem to have known, at least, what they were holding. This one fell into the hands of men who did not care.

On the morning of the 18th of October, 1969, a housekeeper unlocked the Oratory of San Lorenzo, a small church in the heart of Palermo, and found an empty frame above the altar. In the night, someone had climbed up and cut Caravaggio’s Nativity out of it and carried it off through the dark streets. It was enormous, nearly nine feet tall, and it had hung in that exact spot for more than three hundred and fifty years. It is one of the last things Caravaggio ever painted, made in Sicily in 1609, the year before he died. And it is, by common agreement, one of the most beautiful Nativities in the history of art.

This masterpiece was almost certainly handed straight to the Sicilian Mafia, and what became of it is a catalogue of nightmares, with no way of knowing which is true. It has sat on the FBI’s list of top ten art crimes for decades. Mobsters and informants have each offered a version over the years: that it was hidden in a farm shed and eaten by rats and pigs; that it was cut up to make it easier to sell; that it was buried, and then lost under rubble in an earthquake. One detail is documented, and almost too grim to repeat: the thieves once sliced a fragment off the canvas and mailed it to a priest, like a kidnapper sending a finger, to prove they had it.

Above the altar in Palermo today hangs a replica of the painting, so the church does not have to stare at an empty frame forever. For over fifty years, worshippers have knelt beneath an image of an image, praying in front of the ghost of something that hung there for three centuries, and is now almost certainly gone…

4. Portrait of a Young Man (c. 1513–14)

A young man looks out at us over his shoulder, one hand resting near his chest, wrapped in a heavy fur-trimmed coat, his long hair falling loose. He is beautiful, poised, and utterly assured, the way only the very young can be. Raphael painted him around 1513, near the height of his powers and a few years before he would die at thirty-seven. And here is the part that makes the loss almost unbearable: most scholars believe the young man is Raphael. The features match his one confirmed self-portrait in The School of Athens at the Vatican…

If they are right, then what disappeared was not just a masterpiece by one of the greatest painters who ever lived: it was his face.

For a century and a half it belonged to Poland, the pride of the Czartoryski collection in Kraków, one of the family’s “Great Three” alongside Leonardo’s Lady with an Ermine and a Rembrandt. When Germany invaded in 1939, the family hid all three, walling them up in a country house. The Nazis found them within weeks. The paintings were seized for Hitler’s planned museum at Linz, shuttled between cities, and finally hung on the walls of Hans Frank, the governor-general of occupied Poland. In January 1945, with the Soviets closing in, Frank fled west and took the paintings with him.

Two of the Great Three came home. The Leonardo hangs in Kraków today, and so does the Rembrandt. The Raphael was not in Frank’s possession when the Americans arrested him, and it has never been seen again. It is now generally considered the most important painting still missing from the Second World War, one of roughly a hundred thousand works looted in those years that were never recovered.

Every few years a rumor surfaces, and every time it leads nowhere. The Poles have never stopped looking, and the Czartoryski heir once said the thing that keeps the hunt alive:

There is no evidence to suggest it was destroyed.

So the search goes on, and a space is kept ready, for the day a young man last seen in 1945 finally comes home…

5. The Painter on the Road to Tarascon (1888)

Every painting so far comes with a flicker of hope. This one does not…

A man is walking to work. He is on a dirt road outside Arles in the full blaze of a Provencal summer, wearing a straw hat and a blue smock, and strapped to his back and clutched under his arms are the tools of his trade: an easel, brushes, and a fresh canvas. He is going out to paint, and he has a long way to walk. Van Gogh made it in August 1888, and mentioned it to Theo as one of a batch of studies he was shipping north:

A quick sketch I made of myself laden with boxes, sticks, a canvas, on the sunny Tarascon road.

It’s the only self-portrait he ever painted of his whole body, the only picture we have of the man on his feet, off to do the thing he lived for.

In 1912 a museum in Magdeburg bought it, one of the first Van Goghs anywhere to enter a public collection, and someone there loved it enough to do something unusual: in the 1930s they had it photographed in color, an expensive and uncommon thing to do at the time. That decision is the only reason you can see it now.

When the war came, the museum hid its collection deep in a salt mine at Stassfurt, thirty kilometers away, to keep it safe from British bombs. But the same mine also held a hidden factory building jet engines for the Luftwaffe, and when American troops reached it on the 12th of April, 1945, the whole place went up. The fire burned for two weeks. When the Monuments Men, the Allied officers who tracked down looted and endangered art, finally reached the mine, they reported that everything inside had been reduced to ashes.

Almost certainly, the Van Gogh was among it. It exists, for us, only as a color photograph, taken on a whim a decade before. A picture of a picture is all we have of it, and almost certainly all we ever will…

Every painting in this article was being looked after: the Vermeer had its alarm, the Caravaggio had its church, the Van Gogh was buried underground for its own protection, and the burial is what killed it. Nothing is guaranteed to last, not the paintings, and not the things you love, and in the end the only protection any of it ever had was that somebody bothered to look while it was still there.

So go and stand in front of something beautiful this month, if you can. In a room, in person, close enough to see the brushstrokes. It costs you an afternoon, and it is the one thing that no thief and no fire can ever take from you: not the painting, which the world may lose, but the moment it took your breath away, which is yours to keep forever…

There is an unfair truth at the heart of art history: being one of the greatest painters who ever lived, and being remembered as one, are two completely different things...

Most people know the same handful of names. Da Vinci. Picasso. Monet. They shine so brightly that it is easy to assume that fame is a natural hierarchy: the very best rise to the top, while everyone else settles where they belong.

But that is not how it works.

Reputation is not the same as talent. Fame is its own skill, made of timing, luck, self-promotion, the right patron, the right city, and a hundred accidents that have nothing to do with what a person could do with a brush. The poet Emily Dickinson, who published almost nothing in her lifetime and became immortal only after her death, put it perfectly:

Fame is a fickle food upon a shifting plate.

The examples are everywhere. Van Gogh, as we saw last week, died unknown and became a legend only after he was gone. One of the six artists you are about to meet was called “the world’s greatest living painter” in his own lifetime, and today, outside Spain, he’s a stranger to almost everyone but the art world. Even Caravaggio fell out of fashion for centuries before we rediscovered him...

If fame is this unreliable, we need a better way to judge a painter. And there is one, hidden in a word we reach for in front of a great painting: masterpiece. We use it loosely now, to mean simply something wonderful. But it began as a precise thing. In the old craft guilds of Europe, an apprentice who had trained for years would make one work, a single object, and submit it to the masters. If it proved he could do what only a true expert could do, he was granted the title himself. That was the meesterstuk: the masterpiece. Not just a beautiful thing, but proof of true mastery of the craft.

1. The Man Who Could Paint Sunlight

In 1909, a Spanish painter arrived in New York for a solo exhibition and something close to mania broke out. Nearly two hundred paintings sold in a matter of weeks. Crowds queued in the snow to get in. Within a few years he had painted the President of the United States, been made a member of every academy that mattered, and been called by Claude Monet, who knew something about the subject, “the master of light.”

His name was Joaquín Sorolla, and he had come a very long way to get there. He was born in Valencia in 1863, the son of a shopkeeper, and orphaned at two when a cholera epidemic took both his parents in the same summer. He was raised by an aunt and uncle who apprenticed him to a locksmith, hoping he would learn a sensible trade. He was hopeless at it. What he could do, obsessively and from the beginning, was paint the sea he had grown up beside, and specifically what the sun did to it: the way strong Mediterranean light bleaches and refracts, throws violet into the shadows, and turns wet skin into pure light. Nobody in the history of painting has done it better.

The Horse’s Bath shows a boy leading a white horse back out of the sea at Valencia, both still streaming with water, the sun burning along the boy’s bare shoulder and the horse’s dripping flank and shattering across the shallows until the wet sand gleams like a mirror.

He painted it on a canvas over two meters wide, with fast, almost careless-looking strokes that dissolve, the moment you step back, into the most convincing sunlight anyone has ever achieved.

It is one of the hardest things in all of painting, and he made it look like play.

Then, in 1920, he had a stroke while working in his garden and never held a brush again. He died three years later. By then the art world had already turned to Modernism, which decided that beauty like this was sentimental and beside the point, and within a generation the most acclaimed painter in the world was simply forgotten. When the Prado finally gave him a retrospective in 2009, nearly half a million people came. Outside Spain, most of them had never heard his name…

2. A Fall From Grace

The man who painted this was, at his death, one of the most celebrated artists on earth, knighted by a queen and richer than almost any painter alive. Thirty years later his masterpieces were selling for the price of the frame.

And this, possibly the most beautiful painting in the entire article, is hiding something you will not be able to unsee. To get it exactly right, he did something genuinely unhinged, for four straight months...

In the summer of 1882, a failed art salesman, failed teacher, and failed preacher, a man who had disappointed nearly everyone who had ever believed in him, sat down to write his younger brother a letter. He was not yet a painter, not really. He had no money, no wife, and nothing anyone would have called a life. And he wrote this:

What am I in the eyes of most people? A nonentity, an oddity, a disagreeable person — someone who has and will have no position in society, in short a little lower than the lowest.

His name was Vincent van Gogh, and he was right about how the world saw him. What the world did not know at the time, what it would not find out until he was dead, was that this nobody had inside him one of the most extraordinary souls that ever lived, and that he was about to spend the last few years of his life pouring it onto canvas…

He was twenty-seven when he decided to become a painter. Twenty-seven, with no training and a decade left to live. Almost everything you picture when you hear his name he made in a single feverish burst near the end, a body of work most artists could not produce in fifty years, painted in fewer than ten. He sold, in all that time, essentially nothing. He lived on money his brother Theo sent him and on a faith in his own work that almost no one shared. And he died at thirty-seven, in a small French village, believing he had failed.

He could not have been more wrong…

Within a generation of his death, the world fell completely in love with his paintings. The man who could not sell a canvas became one of the most beloved and imitated artists in the history of the world, his pictures worth more than he could have earned in a thousand lifetimes. He changed the course of art forever, and he never knew he had done it.

This is the story of that man, told through 8 of his paintings and, wherever possible, in his own words, because he left us thousands of them in hundreds of letters, mostly to his brother, where he wrote down exactly what he felt as he painted. In that same 1882 letter, right after he called himself the lowest of the low, he wrote down what he wanted his life to be for. It is the promise the rest of this article will watch him keep:

1. The Potato Eaters

Before the sunflowers and the swirling skies, there was this: a dark little room, five peasants, and a plate of potatoes.

Five members of a farming family sit around a wooden table in the evening, lit by a single hanging oil lamp. They are sharing a meal of potatoes and coffee, the only things they have. Their faces are knobbled and plain, their eyes deep-set, their hands, and Vincent wanted you to look hard at those hands, are huge, gnarled, and coarse from a lifetime of digging in the dirt.

Everything is the color of earth and shadow. There is nothing pretty here, and that was the entire point. Other painters of the day liked to dress peasants up into something charming and picturesque. Vincent refused. He wanted the grime and the exhaustion and the dignity all at once, and he wanted you to understand exactly what you were seeing. He explained it to Theo in words that tell you everything about the kind of artist, and man, he intended to be:

You see, I really have wanted to make it so that people get the idea that these folk, who are eating their potatoes by the light of their little lamp, have tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish, and so it speaks of manual labour and — that they have thus honestly earned their food.

He wanted the people who had grown the food to be seen as the ones who deserved it. That was the whole ambition of the painting: to give the poorest, least noticed people he knew their full weight as human beings, and to make the comfortable world look at them and not turn away.

Almost no one liked it. When he sent it out into the world, it was met with something close to universal disapproval, the colors too dark, the figures clumsy, the faces, one critic complained, all wrong. Even his own brother had doubts. It was the first great statement of his life as a painter, and it fell flat. But here’s the thing that tells you who he was: he never stopped believing in it. Years later, sick and far from home, he still called it the best thing he had ever done.

He had set out to make the world feel something for people it preferred not to see, and whether or not anyone applauded, he knew he had done exactly that…

2. The Yellow House

Three years later, everything had changed. The earth tones were gone, burned away by the sun of the south of France, and in their place was the most hopeful color he ever painted: a little house, glowing yellow, under a sky of pure cobalt blue.

In the spring of 1888 he moved to Arles, a town in Provence, and rented four small rooms in this building on a corner square. He painted it in the colors of a man in love with his own future, the whole scene flooded with light. What he was really painting wasn’t the house at all, but everything he hoped would happen inside it: Vincent wanted to start a colony, a “Studio of the South,” a place where painters could live and work together, share meals and ideas and canvases, and keep each other company. For a man who had spent his whole life on the outside of things, this was the dream beneath all his dreams. He said why to Theo with a plainness that breaks your heart a little:

You know I’ve always thought it ridiculous for painters to live alone. You always lose when you’re isolated.

So he furnished the rooms, and he painted canvas after canvas of sunflowers to hang on the walls, getting the house ready the way you would for someone you love, because someone was coming. He had persuaded the painter Paul Gauguin to join him, and he waited for his arrival with more hope than he had let himself feel in years, certain that this was the beginning of the community he had wanted his entire life.

He was right that the Yellow House would change everything. He was only wrong about how: Gauguin would be the first artist to come and live with him there, and he would also be the last…

3. Café Terrace at Night

The dream of the Yellow House was, at its heart, a dream about not being alone. And in the same season he was waiting for Gauguin, Vincent walked out into the Arles evening and painted the feeling itself: a warm, lit café, full of people, glowing against the blue of the night.

It is a corner café on a cobbled square, its terrace spilling golden light onto the street from a single great lantern. People sit at the tables under the awning, in no rush to go home. Above them the sky is deep blue and scattered with stars, and the warmth of the café below seems to hold the darkness at a distance.

This was one of the first times Vincent painted a sky full of stars, the thing that would soon make him immortal, and he did it here, over a scene of ordinary people enjoying an ordinary night out. To him, the lit café was the thing worth painting: human beings gathered in the warmth, the exact companionship he longed for.

There is a detail here that tells you how his mind worked, and how relentlessly he pushed toward light even in the dark. Look at the sky in this painting. For a scene set at night, there is no black in it at all. He was thrilled by this, and wrote to his sister about it:

There’s a painting of night without black. With nothing but beautiful blue, violet and green.

Think about what that means, coming from him. He was painting the night, the dark, and he found a way to do it without a single stroke of blackness, building the whole evening out of blues and violets and that pouring golden light instead. It is the most Vincent thing imaginable. Even when he painted the darkness, he could not help filling it with color and warmth, reaching, always, for the light.

He wanted so badly to believe the night could be beautiful, that a person could sit out under the stars in the glow of a warm café and not be cold, and not be alone. So he made it true the only way he could: he painted it.

4. Starry Night Over the Rhône

That same autumn, a minute’s walk from the Yellow House, Vincent set up his easel on the bank of the river at night and painted one of the most enchanting pictures he ever made…

It is the town of Arles seen across the water, its gas lamps burning along the far shore and throwing long trembling ribbons of gold down into the river. Above it all, the night sky is enormous and alive, the Big Dipper hanging over the town, the stars not as the swirling furnace they would later become but as soft, radiant points, glowing like lamps of their own.

And then, if your eye travels down to the very front of the scene, you find the heart of the whole painting: a couple walking together along the near bank, arm in arm, small against the vast lit night.

Vincent described this canvas to Theo in a letter so vivid it reads like a poem, cataloguing every color with care, the aquamarine sky, the royal blue water, the gaslight coming down in russet gold. And he ended his description not with the stars, but with them:

Two colorful figurines of lovers in the foreground.

That is where his eye came to rest, and that is what the painting is truly about. Not the river, not even the stars, but the two of them. Here was a man who had almost never known romantic love, and he stood alone in the dark by the river, painting a tenderness he had never been given: someone to walk beside, so that the vast night felt warmer and survivable.

It is the last time we will see him this at peace…

5. Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear

Gauguin arrived in October, and for a few weeks the dream held. Two painters under one roof, working side by side. But they were too different and too raw, and as the weather turned cold and shut them indoors, they quarreled, bitterly and often. On the night of December 23rd, 1888, after a final argument, Vincent picked up a razor and cut off most of his own left ear. Gauguin fled to Paris and never saw him again. Vincent was carried to a hospital, and when he came home a couple of weeks later, the Yellow House was empty. Gauguin was gone. The studio of the south, the family of artists, the whole shining dream, was over.

A week after leaving the hospital, in the dead of winter, he did something that tells you everything about the size of his spirit. He stood in front of a mirror and painted himself…

Here he is: gaunt, drawn, a heavy fur cap pulled down over his head, a thick white bandage covering the wound where his ear had been. His face is unbearably sad, and he looks not quite at us but slightly past us, like a man still trying to understand what has happened to him.

But look at what he put behind himself in the picture. Over his shoulder he painted two things: a fresh canvas waiting on its easel, and one of the Japanese prints he loved. Think about that choice. He had just lost his friend, his dream, and a piece of his own body, and he chose to paint himself not as a broken man in an empty house, but as a painter, at work, surrounded by the tools and images of the thing he lived for.

The bandage is what the world had done to him. The canvas waiting on the easel behind it is what he meant to do about it: pick up the brush, and start again.

6. The Starry Night

I took this photograph four years ago standing in front of it at the MoMA in New York, and I can tell you that no reproduction can prepare you for it: seeing this painting in person remains one of the most magical things art has ever done to me…

He had painted the night before. But he had never painted it like this, because he had never been this far down, or reaching this far up.

After the breakdown, Vincent voluntarily committed himself to an asylum at Saint-Rémy, a former monastery for the mentally ill. He was thirty-six, and he knew, now, that his mind was not something he could trust. From the window of his room, behind iron bars, he could see a wheatfield and a strip of sky. He described it to Theo in a way that sounds like a man finding something to hold onto:

Through the iron-barred window I can make out a square of wheat in an enclosure, above which in the morning I see the sun rise in its glory.

And out of that window, that narrow view from inside a mental institution, he made one of the most famous paintings of all time:

The night sky rolls and swirls like a living sea, eleven stars and a blazing crescent moon burning and turning in currents of blue, the whole heavens surging with a power that feels almost too big for the canvas to hold. Beneath it a small village sleeps, its church steeple pointing up. And on the left, a great cypress, the tree that in that part of the world grows in graveyards, rises from the sleeping town all the way into the churning stars, like a bridge between the earth and the sky.

Vincent had trained as a preacher once, and though he had long since broken with the church, he never stopped longing for something larger than himself. He once wrote Theo a line that explains this whole painting:

I have a tremendous need for, shall I say the word, religion, so I go outside at night to paint the stars.

That is what he was doing here: reaching for the divine the only way he had left, through a brush and a sky full of light. He made this locked away, ill, and more alone than he had ever been, and instead of despair he gave us what may be the most beautiful thing anyone has ever painted. The lower he sank, the higher his work climbed, until he turned the view from a barred asylum window into the closest thing we have to heaven…

7. Portrait of Dr. Gachet

In the last summer of his life, out of the asylum at last, Vincent came to a village near Paris called Auvers, and there he painted a portrait of the man who was supposed to make him well.

Dr. Paul Gachet, a melancholy widower and amateur painter, was the physician assigned to watch over him. And here is the first sad thing: Vincent looked at this man and saw, almost immediately, himself. “He is sicker than I am, I think,” he wrote to Theo, “or shall we say just as much.” But two days later, writing to his sister, that wariness had softened into something else: he had found in Gachet, he said, “a true friend, something like another brother, so much do we resemble each other.”

So he painted him:

Gachet sits leaning his head on his hand, in the age-old pose of melancholy, his blue eyes tired, his expression heavy and gentle at once. Vincent said he had tried to give the doctor’s face “the heartbroken expression of our time.” He was no longer painting people, or places, or the world outside. He was painting sadness itself, the particular ache of being a sensitive soul in a hard age, and he had found the perfect face for it in the man meant to cure him.

He wrote something about this painting that reaches out of 1890 and puts a hand on your shoulder. He wanted to make portraits, he said, that people would look at a century later “with longing,” as if the sitter were an apparition. He was hoping a stranger in the future would look into this sad man’s eyes and feel something. He had no idea we would line up by the millions to do exactly that.

He painted it about six weeks before the end…

8. Wheatfield with Crows

And so we come to the last of it: a golden wheatfield under a stormy sky. A flock of black crows scatters up out of the grain, flying in no clear direction. And three rough paths cut through the wheat, one to the left, one to the right, one straight up the middle, and every single one of them leads nowhere, vanishing into the crop or the horizon without arriving anywhere at all.

It was one of the last things he ever painted, made in his final weeks in Auvers.

He told Theo and Jo what he was doing, and it is almost unbearable to read, because you can hear how tired he is:

The brush almost falling from my hands... I made a point of trying to express sadness, extreme loneliness.

But even here, the old fight was not entirely gone. In the very same breath, he added that he hoped these fields under the troubled sky could also say something he could not put into words, something he found “healthy and fortifying about the countryside.” That was Vincent to the very end, painting his own loneliness with the brush falling out of his hand, and still trying to show you that the world was beautiful.

It was here, in late July of 1890, that he walked out with his paints one last time. Two days later, at the age of thirty-seven, he was dead.

For a hundred years the story ended the same way: alone under that wide sky, he raised a revolver to his own chest. But it may not be that simple. In 2011, after years of research, two biographers put forward a different account. In their telling, Vincent did not shoot himself at all. He was shot, probably by accident, by one of a group of local boys who had been tormenting him that summer, a teenager with a malfunctioning pistol, playing at cowboys. And Vincent, they argue, knowing he was dying and having nothing left to lose, chose to protect him, telling everyone he had done it to himself so that no child would be blamed.

Most experts still believe he took his own life, and we will probably never know for certain. But sit with that second possibility for a moment: if he pulled the trigger, it was the final act of a man who had run out of hope, and that is sad enough. If a boy pulled it, then Vincent spent the last conscious days of his life shielding the child who had killed him, so that no one so young would carry the blame. That is the act of one of the most tender souls who ever lived, giving, right to the end, more than he ever got back. The manner of his death does not change the meaning of his life. He gave everything, and he never knew what was coming…

Because here is what was coming: Vincent died believing he was a failure, and he very nearly vanished from history, another obscure painter dead before forty with a pile of unsold canvases. That we know his name at all we owe, more than to anyone, to a woman most people have never heard of: Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, Theo’s wife.

Theo died just six months after his brother, and Jo, widowed at twenty-eight with a baby son, was left with hundreds of paintings the art world did not want and hundreds of letters no one had read. Everyone advised her to let it go. She refused. She spent the rest of her life organizing exhibitions, publishing Vincent’s letters so the world could finally hear his voice, and stubbornly making people see what she had seen. Her son, named Vincent after his uncle, would one day help found the museum in Amsterdam that bears the family name. The love of a brother, and then the devotion of that brother’s wife, is the reason a lonely man’s paintings ever reached us at all.

It took the world only a few decades to realize what it had thrown away. His paintings now hang behind glass in the greatest museums on earth, and every day people stand in front of them and feel their eyes sting, and cannot quite say why. Every honor a painter can be given, he has been given, and all of it arrived after he was gone. Long before the end, he had described his own life in a single sentence:

There may be a great fire in our soul, but no one ever comes to warm himself by it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke.

They see the fire now, Vincent. The whole world came to warm itself at it. It only came too late for you to feel it.

And maybe, just maybe, it is not too late after all. I have never watched Doctor Who, but I once saw a single episode of it, called “Vincent and the Doctor,” and it ends with a miracle I have never forgotten. Vincent is carried forward through time into a modern museum, where he stands in a crowded room and hears a man explain that this painter the world ignored is now the most treasured artist who ever lived. And you watch him understand, at last, that he mattered. I think about that scene more than I would like to admit. Because none of us truly knows what becomes of a soul when the body gives out, whether some spark of who we were goes on somewhere, out among the stars he loved. And if it does, then perhaps Vincent finally knows the thing he needed to hear his whole life: that he was never a nobody, and that he is loved now beyond anything he could have imagined.

Vincent believed, with all his heart, that death was not an ending but a passage, that we reach the heavens the way we take a train to another town. He said it himself, and I can think of no better words to leave you with, or to send up to him, wherever that irreplaceable soul has gone:

Why, I say to myself, should the spots of light in the firmament be less accessible to us than the black spots on the map of France. Just as we take the train to go to Tarascon or Rouen, we take death to reach a star.

Rest well, Vincent. You got there. And we love you.

Norman Rockwell spent his whole life being told he was not a real artist, and he never fought it. He put it like this:

Some people have been kind enough to call me a fine artist. I’ve always called myself an illustrator. I’m not sure what the difference is.

For most of the twentieth century, the art world was very sure of the difference...

Rockwell was the man on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, the painter of Thanksgiving dinners and small-town life, beloved by millions and dismissed by the critics as sentimental, commercial, and simple. To them, “illustrator” was not a job description but a verdict: a way of saying he was not, and could never be, a real artist. The dean of American art critics, Clement Greenberg, put him “below the rank of minor artist” and said that he had “chosen not to be serious.” To be called a Rockwell became a kind of insult, a byword for pretty, harmless, and shallow.

But let’s take a look at the etymology of the very word they used to brush him off: “illustrator” comes from the Latin illustrare, meaning to light up, to illuminate, to cast light on a thing so that it can finally be seen. And that, it turns out, is exactly what Rockwell did for fifty years. He took the ordinary American moments everyone lived through and no one looked at twice, and he lit them from within until you could not look away.

Many critics have since come around. The paintings they called kitsch now hang in major museums and sell for tens of millions… one of them, as you’ll see later, was even chosen to hang in the White House. The sentimental illustrator, it seems, was one of the sharpest observers of the human heart America ever produced, and beneath the warmth there was often something far more serious than anyone bothered to notice.

Rockwell knew precisely what he was doing, and he said so, plainly, without apology:

My life’s work, and my pleasure, is to tell stories to other people through pictures.

1. The Runaway

We start with a small boy who has decided to leave home for good.

You can read the whole story without a word of explanation, which was Rockwell’s particular genius. The boy has run away. His belongings are tied up in a red handkerchief on a stick, tucked under the stool, the entire worldly estate of a child who has had enough. He has made it as far as a roadside diner, where he sits beside a state trooper. You brace, for a second, for him to be in trouble. Then you look again, and see there is nothing to fear…

The trooper is not scolding him or marching him out. He has leaned down, his big frame folded to meet the boy at eye level, and he is talking to him gently while the counterman looks on with a knowing smile. Nobody here makes him feel small for wanting to leave. There is no punishment coming. Instead the boy gets a warm room, a grown-up who takes him seriously, and, you sense, a ride home when the talking is done. A big man with a badge has chosen to be tender with a child who was sure no one in the world was on his side.

Rockwell built this out of real people and real places, which is how he worked. The officer was his actual neighbor in Stockbridge, a state trooper named Richard Clemens, and the boy was eight-year-old Eddie Locke from the local school. Rockwell posed them at a Howard Johnson’s, and then he did what he always did: he improved reality. He erased every trace of the restaurant, turning its famous list of twenty-eight ice cream flavors into a plain blackboard of daily specials, because, he explained, he “wanted a more rural look, to suggest the kid had gotten a little further out of town.”

He wanted the boy just slightly more lost, so that being found would mean a little more.

Every one of us was once that boy, certain the whole world had turned against us, running as far as our legs would carry us, sure that leaving was the only answer. And what we needed was not to be caught and punished, but exactly this: one patient adult who came down to our level and made us feel we were worth going after. Because sometimes the kindest thing you can do for someone who is running away is to sit beside them for a while, and point them back toward home…

In the spring of 1945, with the war in Europe finally over, Rockwell painted a young soldier stepping back into the poor brick courtyard he grew up in, and the whole building erupting with joy to see him alive.

I wanted the mood of the painting to be expanded through film, sort of a moving painting.

Sit with that for a second, because it turns out to be the secret history of an entire art form. We tend to think of cinema as something new, a little over a century old. But the image on the screen has a much older parent...

Some of the very first films ever made, back in the 1890s, were built around famous paintings: a well-known canvas chosen as the starting point, then staged with actors and costumes and brought to life in motion. One French battle painting, Les Dernières Cartouches, was restaged as a film by Lumière, by Méliès, and by Pathé, all within a few years of each other.

Before cinema knew how to tell a story, all it wanted was to make a painting move.

That instinct never left, and the word itself explains why: “Cinema” comes from the Greek kinema, meaning “movement”, and motion is the one thing film had that painting never did.

More than a century on, directors are still drawing on art history, and far more often than you would ever guess. Once you learn how to look, you start seeing it everywhere: a shot that lingers a beat too long, a face arranged just the way a painter arranged it centuries ago, a whole scene that feels older than the film around it. Sometimes it’s a bow to a master the director loves. Sometimes it’s outright theft, assuming no one will notice. And every so often a director loves a painting so much that they build the entire film around it.

The first film critics, watching those flickering images move, sensed where it had all come from and reached for the only words that fit: they called cinema “painting in motion.” They had no idea how right they were…

1. The Painting That Became a Movie

Most films borrow a painting for a scene. This one owes a painting its entire existence.

When DreamWorks wanted Ridley Scott to direct their Roman epic, they didn’t hand him a script... they handed him a picture: Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Pollice Verso, painted in 1872, in which a victorious gladiator stands over his fallen opponent and looks up at a roaring crowd, waiting to be told whether to kill him.

According to Russell Crowe, Scott took one look and said:

No matter what is in the script, I want to make this movie.

The painting was the pitch, and it worked.

You can feel Gérôme in nearly every frame of the Colosseum. The dust, the height of the stands, the emperor in his box, the terrible intimacy of a crowd deciding a man’s death for sport, all of it is lifted from that one canvas. Even the film’s most famous gesture comes from the painting’s title. Pollice verso is Latin for “with a turned thumb,” and the Romans believed the thumb, the pollex, took its name from polleo, “to have power”: the one finger that held a life in its balance, and could tip it either way.

There is a small twist though. Gérôme painted the crowd’s thumbs pointing down, the signal for death. In the Gladiator, when the moment finally comes for Maximus, the emperor Commodus must grudgingly turn his thumb up to spare him, bending to the very crowd whose bloodlust the painting had captured a century before.

2. A Painting About Love, Used for the Opposite

In Shutter Island, Leonardo DiCaprio’s tormented Marshal keeps dreaming of his dead wife, Dolores. In the film’s most beautiful and unbearable moment, he holds her from behind in a wash of warm golden light, her flowered yellow dress glowing against the dark, the two of them merged into a single shimmering shape.

Anyone who has seen Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss knows where this image came from: it’s the same embrace, the same gold, the same flowers, and the same two bodies dissolving into one.

It is the most famous painting of romantic love ever made, and Klimt built its shimmer from real gold leaf, inspired by the Byzantine mosaics he had seen in Ravenna.

But Scorsese does something devastating with it. In Klimt, the gold means love made eternal. Here, as the Marshal holds his wife in that same golden glow, she crumbles to ash in his arms, because the embrace is not a memory but something his mind has built to survive a grief he cannot face…

The resemblance has never been officially confirmed, but between the pose, the gold, and that yellow dress, it is almost impossible to see as an accident.

3. They Rebuilt the Loneliest Painting in America

Some directors nod to a painting. Herbert Ross literally reconstructed one, and had his actors climb inside it…

Pennies from Heaven is a Depression-era musical, and at one point Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters step into a late-night diner that any American will recognize instantly: the green-walled corner café, the wraparound glass, the two customers and the lone figure with his back to us, all bathed in that cold electric glow.

It is Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, the most famous painting of loneliness ever made, rebuilt as a set. The production designer, Ken Adam, said that Ross “was very much influenced by the paintings of Edward Hopper,” and folded them straight into his designs. Shot by the great Gordon Willis, the tableau is close enough to make you do a double take.

And here’s the thing that makes the choice perfect: Hopper’s diner is a painting about people sitting inches apart and utterly alone, and that is exactly what this film is beneath its song and dance.

4. The Most Famous Horror Image Ever Made Was a Surrealist Painting

If you have never seen The Exorcist, you have still seen the image below.

A priest steps from a cab and stands at a garden gate at night, a single streetlamp glowing through the mist while an unearthly light pours from an upstairs window. It became the film’s poster, and one of the most recognizable images in cinema. But its author is not the director William Friedkin. It is the Belgian Surrealist René Magritte.

Friedkin was completely open about it. The scene came from Magritte’s The Empire of Light, a series of paintings showing a house on a darkened street lit by one lamp, beneath a sky that is, impossibly, broad daylight.

As Friedkin recalled:

I saw it in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. I chose the house to match the Magritte painting, the streetlamp, the shaft of light.

He spent an entire day lighting that single shot and filmed it on the second night, chasing the exact uncanny glow the painter had found.

What makes the borrowing so right is what Magritte’s painting is about: it puts two things that cannot coexist, day and night, in the same frame, and the result is a scene your eye accepts and your mind refuses. That is precisely the feeling Friedkin needed at the threshold of that house, where something impossible is happening in an ordinary suburban bedroom. He borrowed a painting about the collision of two worlds to mark the door where two worlds were about to collide…

5. The Man Who Climbed Into the Sky

Magritte turns up twice in this piece, and that is no accident. No painter ever understood better how to make an ordinary world feel slightly wrong, which is exactly the sensation The Truman Show is built on.

Truman Burbank has spent his whole life inside a television set without knowing it, the star of a show he never agreed to be in. At the end, having finally understood, he sails his little boat across his fake ocean until the bow strikes the wall of the world, a blue dome with clouds on it. He finds a staircase, climbs it, and stands at a door cut into the sky. That final image is Magritte’s Architecture au clair de lune: a staircase set impossibly against the open sky.

Unlike the Exorcist scene, Peter Weir never confirmed the reference, but it is hard to imagine a more fitting source. Magritte spent his career painting a reality that looks normal until you notice it cannot be real: doors that open onto nothing and skies that behave like walls. That is Truman’s entire life. So when he climbs those steps and reaches for the door in the sky, he is, in a sense, stepping out of a Magritte, out of the beautiful lie, and into whatever waits on the other side.

6. A Circle of Men Going Nowhere

In A Clockwork Orange, Kubrick’s ultra-violent delinquent Alex is sent to prison, and there is a shot of the inmates taking their daily exercise: a line of men in uniforms trudging in a slow, endless circle around a high-walled yard, heads down, going nowhere. It is composed almost exactly like Vincent van Gogh’s Prisoners’ Round, a canvas of prisoners shuffling in that same hopeless ring. And with Kubrick, almost nothing is accidental. In a 1982 interview, Jack Nicholson said of working with him:

He gives new meaning to the word meticulous.

A man that exact did not stumble into a van Gogh by chance.

Vincent made it in 1890, during his confinement in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, when he was too unwell to go outside and paint the world, and desperate to be let out. Trapped indoors, he copied an old engraving of a London prison yard, and everyone who has looked closely believes he put himself into it: one prisoner near the front, capless, face turned toward us, is thought to wear van Gogh’s own features. He was a man locked away, painting a picture of men locked away, and slipping his own face into the crowd.

7. The Statue That Steps Off Her Pedestal

Every film so far has borrowed a painting. This one borrows a sculpture, and it does it with almost nothing but a black background and a pair of gloves…

In Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers, set among three young cinephiles in Paris in 1968, there is a moment when Isabelle, played by Eva Green in her very first film role, walks into a dark room wearing a sheet knotted at her waist and long black opera gloves that reach past the elbow. Behind her, everything is black. Her bare arms disappear into the darkness, and for a second she is not a young woman at all but the Venus de Milo: the famous Greek marble in the Louvre, missing both her arms.

Matthew, the American who has fallen for Isabelle, looks at her and says:

I’ve always wanted to make love to the Venus de Milo.

The clever part is how simple it is: there are no special effects, just light, a black backdrop, and two black gloves. Out of them Bertolucci conjures one of the most recognizable sculptures in the world.

8. Ophelia, Waiting for the End of the World

You might remember this painting from last week’s article on the Pre-Raphaelites. Here it is again, floating into a film about the end of everything.

Melancholia opens with one of the most beautiful sequences in modern cinema: eight minutes of dreamlike, slow-motion images set to Wagner, previewing everything the film is about to do to you. In one of them, Kirsten Dunst drifts down a dark stream in her wedding dress, pale and serene, with flowers in her hands. It is John Everett Millais’s Ophelia brought to life, the masterpiece of Shakespeare’s drowned girl, recreated so faithfully that von Trier used the image on the film’s poster.

The movie is about depression, an illness director Lars von Trier knows firsthand, and it ends with a planet colliding with the Earth and destroying all life. Millais painted a young woman singing as the water closes over her, meeting death with an eerie, dreadful calm. That is exactly the state von Trier gives his heroine: as the world races toward annihilation, she is the only one not afraid, floating toward the end with the same terrible serenity as Ophelia going under.

He borrowed a Victorian painting of one girl’s death and used it to foretell the death of everything…

9. The Angel With the Tear

Alexandre Cabanel painted the most beautiful gaze in the history of art, and it may be where George Lucas found the birth of Darth Vader.

Cabanel’s The Fallen Angel, made in 1847, shows Lucifer moments after his fall from heaven. A gorgeous, muscular angel, his face half-buried behind his arm, and above it a single eye glares out at us. A tear trembles just below it, about to fall, but it is not a tear of repentance. The look is grief and fury and wounded pride all at once, the face of someone who has lost everything and blames the one who cast him out.

Revenge of the Sith is the story of Anakin Skywalker’s fall, and it is impossible to watch Cabanel’s artwork without seeing the similarities. Lucas never confirmed the connection, but the two stories rhyme: both are gifted beings who fall not through simple wickedness but through pride. Anakin is Milton’s Lucifer in another costume, the chosen one who reaches for forbidden power and, in grasping it, destroys the very thing he was trying to save. Cabanel painted that fall in 1847, drawing on Paradise Lost, a long time before a galaxy far, far away gave it a black helmet and a new name.

10. Walking Into the Painting

In Dreams, Akira Kurosawa filmed eight of his own dreams, and the most astonishing is called “Crows.” A young painter stands in a gallery, studying the canvases of Vincent van Gogh. He leans close to one, and then he is simply there, inside it, walking through van Gogh’s world. He wanders from one painting into the next, until he finds the artist himself at his easel in a field, straw hat, bandaged ear, played, in a detail almost too good to be true, by Martin Scorsese.

Van Gogh disappears down a path through a golden wheatfield, a flock of black crows explodes into the sky, and we recognize it: Wheatfield with Crows, one of the last things van Gogh ever painted, made in the weeks before he walked into a field much like this one and shot himself.

The dreamer stops before the finished canvas and takes off his hat. And I cannot think of a better image to end on than that one: a man loved a painting so much that he climbed inside it, walked through it, followed its maker to the edge of his own death, and came out changed.

Vincent van Gogh sold almost nothing during his life and died sure he had failed. But he once wrote down the only thing he ever wanted from his work:

I want to touch people with my art. I want them to say, he feels deeply, he feels tenderly.

He has been gone more than a century. And still, every time a director builds one of his paintings again on the screen, and every time your throat tightens at an image and you can’t say why, his wish is coming true, one stranger at a time. Maybe that is the only kind of forever any of us get in this life. Not to last, but to make one true thing, and have someone we will never meet lean in, years later, and whisper back: “Yes. Me too.”

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.

So begins one of the most famous poems in the English language, written by John Keats, who died at twenty-five and became a kind of patron saint to a group of young painters who would take those words as something close to a religion.

They called themselves the Pre-Raphaelites, and for a few short years in Victorian England they took on one impossible task: make the most beautiful paintings the world had ever seen…

If you’ve ever scrolled past one of these and felt something in your chest, you already know what they were after. The beauty hits you before you have time to think, and for most people it’s the only thing they ever notice.

There’s an old word for this. Before “glamour” meant red carpets and magazine covers, it meant a magic spell, an enchantment cast over the eyes to make a thing appear lovelier than it really is. Look at the painting above and you fall under it. You take in the blue velvet dress and the stained-glass light, and you stop right there, enchanted, and miss what the painter buried in plain sight...

Because there is almost always something hidden: a doomed love, a secret grief, a guilt that never healed. These painters often took the worst things that ever happened to them and wove them inside the most beautiful things they could create, knowing it was the one place they stood a chance of surviving.

What follows are 7 of these paintings. Once you know what they are really about, you will never see them the same way. It was Keats, again, who put it best, in the line that gave my newsletter its name:

Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

He was right. It’s just that the truth beneath all that beauty is almost never the one you’d expect to find…

1. The Painting That Predicted a Death

We begin with the most famous of them all, and the one that started everything.

You are looking at Ophelia, from Hamlet: the young woman who loses her mind after the man she loves murders her father, and drowns in a stream while singing and gathering flowers. John Everett Millais painted her in the instant before she goes under, her hands open, her lips still parted in song, her gown pulling her down.

In the play, her death is almost a throwaway. It happens offstage, and the queen simply reports it afterward:

There is a willow grows aslant a brook... When down her weedy trophies and herself fell in the weeping brook.

A few more lines, and the story moves on. Millais took that half-second and spent the better part of a year on it.

Every flower in the water is real, painted with the obsessive botanical precision the Pre-Raphaelites were famous for, and almost every one carries a hidden meaning. The pansies floating on her dress stood for love in vain. The violets around her neck meant faithfulness. The daisy near her hand, innocence. The weeping willow leaning over her was the old symbol of forsaken love. And bright against her gown, one red poppy: the flower of sleep and death, which Shakespeare never mentioned, and which Millais added himself. He built the whole tragedy into the foliage, in a language his Victorian viewers could read like text, and which we drift right past today.

To get the water right, Millais did something extraordinary: he painted the river first, outdoors, on the banks of a stream in Surrey, sitting there for five months, recording every leaf and reed. Then, through the following winter, he painted the girl. Her name was Elizabeth Siddal. She was twenty-two, discovered working in a hat shop, and she would become the great tragic figure of this whole story.

To pose as the drowning Ophelia, Siddal lay for hours in a bathtub of water in Millais’s studio, wearing an antique silver gown he had bought for the purpose. It was winter, so he set oil lamps beneath the tub to keep the water warm. One day, absorbed in his work, Millais did not notice that the lamps had gone out. Siddal, the perfect model, said nothing and did not move, and lay there in the freezing water until the session ended. She caught a severe cold that turned to pneumonia.

She recovered, but never fully, and she never posed for Millais again. And here is the detail that turns this painting into something almost unbearable to look at: ten years later Elizabeth Siddal died of an overdose of laudanum, the opium drug that Victorians took by the spoonful. She was thirty-two.

Look again at that single red poppy Millais slipped into the picture, the flower that has always meant both sleep and death, and that opium is made from.

He painted a beautiful young woman playing a girl who drowns. He could not have known he was also painting her fate.

2. The Second Her Conscience Woke

At first glance, this is a pleasant domestic scene. A young couple at a piano in a sunlit sitting room, mid-song. That is exactly what most Victorians saw, and what the painter wanted them to see first, so that the truth would land harder when they finally noticed it…

They are not married. She is his mistress, kept in this gaudy little room, and the painting captures one precise instant: the moment her conscience wakes. A phrase in the song they are singing has struck her, and she is rising off his lap, mid-thought, staring out the window at a purer life she has suddenly remembered she could still choose. He hasn’t noticed. He is still playing.

The painter was William Holman Hunt, and it helps to know who he was. In 1848, three young men in London, Hunt, Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, formed a secret society they called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The name was a rejection: they thought art had gone soft and artificial ever since Raphael, and they wanted to go back past him, to a time when painting was truthful, detailed, and sincere. So they painted from nature, obsessively, and packed their canvases with meaning. All three men appear in this article, and Hunt was the most fiercely moral of them. He believed a painting should be read like scripture.

So he filled this room with clues for anyone patient enough to look. Under the table, a cat toys with a broken-winged bird, exactly what this man is doing to this woman. On the floor lies a tangled skein of yarn, the web she is caught in. A single glove has been thrown down, a warning of the fate of a discarded mistress...

But the key to the whole thing is behind her, in the mirror. It reflects what she is looking at: the open window, the green garden, the light. She has spent her life with her back to it. And Hunt has caught her in the one second she turns around, when a woman the world had written off decides she might still be saved.

3. What Is Worth Dying For?

Here is one of the most beloved paintings in Britain:

He was talking about the world at large, but it reads differently now, because so much of what he built has become exactly that: a thing of the past...

There was a time, and it wasn’t so long ago, when a Disney film was made entirely by hand. Not rendered by a room full of computers, but drawn by hundreds of people, hunched over desks for years at a time, up to twenty-four separate drawings for every single second you watched.

We have forgotten what the word even means. “Animation” comes from the Latin anima: soul, breath, the thing that makes a living creature alive. To animate something is, in the most literal sense, to give it a soul. And that is the honest way to describe what these people were doing.

Someone would sit alone with a pencil, and out of talent and patience and a devotion that’s hard to imagine today, breathe a soul into a dead drawing so completely that a child in a dark theater would forget it wasn’t real, cry over it, and carry it for the rest of their life.

That craft is gone now. The films are still here, but no one makes them this way anymore, and in an age that hands more and more of its art to AI, it’s hard to imagine anyone ever will again. Which makes it worth remembering what those artists were actually reaching for. Walt even had a name for it. He called it “the plausible impossible”: not a hyperrealistic copy of the world, but something stretched and exaggerated beyond anything that could ever be real, because he understood that a drawing which imitates life exactly feels dead on the screen.

1. The Film That Should Have Ruined Him

To understand what these people were capable of, you have to start at the beginning, with the film everyone was certain would fail…

In 1934, Walt Disney told the world he was going to make a feature-length cartoon. Nobody had ever done it and the entire industry thought he had lost his mind. They called it “Disney’s Folly,” and waited for it to bankrupt him. Even his own wife told him that nobody would ever pay to sit through a cartoon about dwarfs.

The scale of what he was attempting is hard to take in even now: Snow White took around three years, 750 artists, and nearly two million separate paintings to complete.

The budget, which was supposed to land somewhere near a couple hundred thousand dollars, ballooned to almost one and a half million, an unthinkable sum in the middle of the Depression, and Walt had to borrow against everything he owned to finish it.

But the part that matters most is what they had to invent to do it. A flat cartoon couldn’t hold a viewer for eighty minutes; it needed depth, a world you could fall into. So Disney’s team built a machine to create it. They called it the multiplane camera, a tower standing over ten feet tall that held layers of separately painted glass, foreground, middle, background, each at a different distance from the lens.

By moving those panes independently, the camera could push through a scene, past the trees and into the forest, and for the first time a drawing had genuine space inside it. They tested the whole apparatus first on a short film called The Old Mill before they dared trust it with the feature.

Walt, being Walt, was delighted with his new toy and he told Time magazine:

I get a kick just watching the boys operate it.

And then it opened. On the night of December 21, 1937, at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles, a room full of Hollywood royalty, the very people who had called it a folly, rose to their feet. The film went on to become the most successful picture in the world. Far from ruining Walt, it built his studio, and it invented an entire art form, the one every film after it would be measured against…

That is where this story begins: with hundreds of people, bent over two million drawings, betting everything they had on the idea that a cartoon could steal your heart.

2. An Entire Year Spent Drawing Water

Three years after Snow White, the studio made Pinocchio, and to this day anyone who studies animation for a living will tell you it is the most technically perfect hand-drawn film ever made.

There is a whole craft inside animation that most people never think about, called effects animation. It is the art of drawing everything that isn’t a character: the rain, the smoke, the fire, the shadows, and hardest of all, the water. A person can be drawn as a shape that moves. Water has no shape. It ripples, splashes, catches light, turns to foam, goes dark and heavy when you sink beneath it, and every one of those behaviors has to be understood and then drawn, by hand, frame after frame, until it looks like the real thing.

To see what that actually meant, look at this original hand-painted production cel from the film:

One of the effects animators on Pinocchio, a man named Sandy Strother, kept a diary while he worked. He spent a full year animating nothing but water. A year of one man’s working life, drawing water until it moved the way it does in the world.

And it worked...

To give the ocean depth, the animators packed detail into the nearest waves and let it fall away toward the horizon, then traced every wave a second time in colored pencil to give it a sculpted, three-dimensional edge. The result stunned even the artists who made it. Ollie Johnston called it “one of the finest things the studio’s ever done.” His colleague Frank Thomas put it more bluntly:

The water looks so real a person can drown in it, and they do.

Then there is Monstro, the whale. The climax is a chase across a raging sea against a leviathan that swallows ships whole, all of it conjured by hand. And the care ran deeper than what reached the screen: to help animators draw a character consistently from every angle, Walt built a whole department that sculpted them first, in clay. Before a single frame of Geppetto was drawn, a sculptor had shaped the old woodcarver in three dimensions so the animators had something real to turn in their hands and study from every side.

And that is why the artistry behind Pinocchio never ceases to amaze me: every drop in that ocean was a choice someone made by hand, one frame at a time. A year of a person’s life went into it, just so the sea would look real enough to drown in…

3. The Man Who Painted a Fairy Tale Like a Cathedral

By the late 1950s, Walt Disney was restless. His recent films had been criticized as pretty but flat, cartoons without a soul of their own. So for Sleeping Beauty, he did something he had never done before. He handed the entire look of a feature film to a single painter, and told him to make something nobody had ever seen.

The painter was Eyvind Earle, an American artist who had sold a watercolor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the age of twenty-three. The idea began when one of the studio’s layout artists visited the Cloisters in New York, stood in front of the medieval unicorn tapestries, and came back with a thought: what if a film could look like that?

Earle took that thought and built an entire world from it.

He studied the unicorn tapestries, fifteenth-century illuminated manuscripts, Persian miniatures, Gothic cathedrals, Bruegel, Botticelli, and he fused them into something unlike any cartoon before or since. In his own words:

I wanted stylized, simplified Gothic. Straight, tall, perpendicular lines like Gothic cathedrals. I rearranged the bushes and trees in geometrical patterns. I made a medieval tapestry out of the surface wherever possible.

Walt understood exactly what he was asking for, and exactly what it would cost him. He told the film’s sequence director:

What we want out of this is a moving illustration. I don’t care how long it takes.

The production stretched across nearly the entire decade of the 1950s.

It was shot in an enormous 70mm widescreen format, which meant every background had to be painted far wider and in far greater detail than a normal film, and a single one could take weeks. Earle personally set the color and directed the look on virtually every background in the movie. The forest scene alone reportedly cost ten thousand dollars. By the time it was finished, Sleeping Beauty had become the most expensive animated film ever made, around six million dollars, which is something like sixty-five million today.

And the labor did not stop with the paintings: this was among the last Disney features whose characters were inked onto celluloid entirely by hand, every outline of every character on every frame, traced in ink by an artist, before it could be painted and photographed.

The film was a commercial disappointment when it opened in 1959. It very nearly broke the animation department. But look at it now and it does not look like a cartoon at all: it looks like an illuminated manuscript that someone taught to move, made in an age when a studio would still let one obsessive painter spend the better part of ten years turning a fairy tale into fine art…

4. The Machine That Saved the Studio and Broke Walt’s Heart

This is the moment the story turns.

Sleeping Beauty had been a masterpiece, but it had nearly ruined Disney. Years of work and six million dollars for a film that lost money at the box office; the hand-inking of every single cel, one outline at a time, had become so slow and so expensive that it threatened to close the animation department for good. And the next film, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, presented a problem that would have been almost unthinkable to draw the old way: not one spotted dog, but ninety-nine of them, each covered in spots that had to move and shift with every step, across a feature-length film.

The old method could not survive this. Something had to give.

The rescue came from a man named Ub Iwerks, one of the most important figures in the studio’s history, the co-creator of Mickey Mouse himself. Iwerks had been tinkering with the office photocopier, the Xerox machine, and he found a way to adapt it to animation. Instead of handing every drawing to the ink department, where an artist would painstakingly trace the animator’s pencil lines onto the clear celluloid by hand, the Xerox camera could now transfer those pencil drawings directly onto the cel.

It solved everything. The ninety-nine dogs became possible because the spots could be reproduced and repeated where once they would have taken armies of inkers years. The crushing cost of hand-inking vanished: it saved the animation department, and very likely the studio’s future in feature films.

But it came at a price... the Xerox left every character with the animator’s raw pencil line: rough, dark, scratchy, toner clinging imperfectly to the slick cel, nothing like the clean, delicate, hand-traced ink line Walt had spent his entire life perfecting. To him, the film looked unfinished. He is reported to have genuinely disliked the harsh new style, feeling it cheapened the artistry the studio had been built on. The most beautiful line in animation, the one that had made Snow White and Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty beloved classics, had been traded away to survive.

And it worked so well that the studio used the Xerox process for roughly the next thirty years. The hand-inked cel, the craft of those hundreds of artists tracing every line by hand, effectively ended here, in 1961, with a machine, out of necessity, over the objections of the man whose name was on the door…

The wonder was still there in the films that followed. But something had been lost, and everyone who loved the old way knew it.

5. The Last One Made by Hand

And so we come to the end, in more ways than one.

By the late 1980s, the studio had been through a long, cold decade. The animation department had nearly been shut down, but in 1989 came a film about a mermaid who trades her voice for a pair of legs, and it brought Disney roaring back to life. The Little Mermaid revived the studio, launched what people now call the Disney Renaissance, and sent audiences out of theaters singing.

But there is something about it that almost no one in those theaters understood at the time. They were watching the end of an era…

The Little Mermaid was the last Disney feature film ever made using the traditional hand-painted cel method. This is not a matter of opinion: it is the official record. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, which holds one of its cels, states it plainly: it was the last one made the old way. Every film that followed would be colored inside a computer.

There is a fitting poetry in what the film demanded. It is set almost entirely underwater, which meant bubbles, thousands upon thousands of them, each one an effect that had to be drawn by hand. The task was so enormous that the studio had to send much of the bubble work to another animation house just to complete it.

And when they reached for the old multiplane camera, the fourteen-foot tower that had given Snow White its depth back in 1937, they found it had fallen into such disrepair that it could barely be used…

Think about the span of it: from Snow White in 1937 to The Little Mermaid in 1989, more than fifty years, an unbroken chain of human hands. And this was the last link in that chain. The artists who finished it could not have known they were the last to do it the way it had always been done, closing a door that had stood open since before most of them were born.

In the end, the films were not made of ink and paint at all. They were made of people, and of a labor so patient and so hidden that we mistook it for magic…

Consider just the last step, the one nobody thinks about: the Ink and Paint department, where the animators’ pencil drawings became finished, colored cels. According to the Walt Disney Family Museum, this was done for decades by around a hundred women, most under twenty-five. An inker traced every line of every character by hand, in white gloves with the fingertips cut off, using the finest pen nib made, so that not one speck of dust could reach the celluloid. At full speed she managed eight to ten cels an hour, and a film needed hundreds of thousands. They mixed their own colors, too: Snow White’s blush was rouge dabbed from their own compacts, and the Blue Fairy’s wings needed a paint kept so cold they worked beside an open refrigerator. For all this they earned eighteen dollars a week, many of them waking at 4:40 to catch a streetcar to the studio.

And here is the thing that ought to stay with us: almost every one of them, looking back, said they loved it, and that it was a privilege. They gave their eyes and their best years to work the world would never see their names attached to, so that a child would believe, for ninety minutes, that a drawing was alive.

Today everything chases realism, and somehow the more real it looks, the less alive it feels. Because the thing that made those old films breathe was not the accuracy, but the person on the other side of the drawing. The human hand…

That is what we are trading away. We went from hands, to computers, to AI, and at every step there is a little less of the person left in it. The machine is faster, it never tires, and it never asks for even the eighteen dollars a week those women were paid. But it has never once loved anything or anyone… and you can feel that absence, the way a room feels different when no one is home. The author Joanna Maciejewska put it better than anyone:

I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.

We got it backwards. We are handing the machines our creativity, and keeping the drudgery for ourselves.

Those worlds were built by hand, by people, one line and one frame and one bubble at a time. We were lucky to have grown up inside them. And we may be the last ones who did…

We are taught to approach art like a puzzle: to decode the symbols, admire the technique, and work out what it all means. But no one has ever wept in front of an artwork because the composition was balanced. We are moved because a feeling we were sure was ours alone is looking back at us out of the canvas.

The word “emotion” comes from the Latin emovere, “to move out.” And that is exactly what the greatest paintings do: they reach into us and draw something long buried back into the light, where we can finally see it.

The great masters always knew this was the point. Edvard Munch once said:

I don’t believe in an art that is not born out of man’s need to open his heart.

But it was a legendary novelist who explained it best. In his essay What Is Art?, Leo Tolstoy argued that it exists for one reason only:

The activity of art is based on the fact that a man, receiving through his sense of hearing or sight another man’s expression of feeling, is capable of experiencing the emotion which moved the man who expressed it.

And then comes the part I love most:

The receiver of a true artistic impression is so united to the artist that he feels as if the work were his own and not someone else’s, as if what it expresses were just what he had long been wishing to express. A real work of art destroys, in the consciousness of the receiver, the separation between himself and the artist. In this uniting of it with others lies the great attractive force of art.

1. The One Who Never Stopped Waiting

This is the most heartbreaking reunion in all of literature, and to understand it, you first have to know who the dog is…

His name is Argos, and he belonged to Odysseus.

Before sailing for Troy, Odysseus had bred him himself, and the puppy grew into the finest hunting dog on the island. But the war came before Argos was even fully grown. Homer tells us that Odysseus “got no joy of him,” because he left before their life together could properly begin. It is the same phrase Homer uses, one book earlier, for Odysseus’s infant son. Odysseus did not come home for twenty years…

When he finally returned to his island, he came in disguise, dressed as a beggar, because his house was full of men trying to steal his wife and his kingdom, and to survive he had to be a stranger in his own home. At first, not one person knew him. Not the servants who had worked his land for twenty years. Not the people who had known his face all their lives. Not even his wife.

But lying in the dirt, too weak to stand and covered in ticks, was an old dog. Argos had waited twenty years for a man everyone else believed was dead…

And when a filthy stranger shuffled up to the gate, the dog lifted his head. He knew. Something in that ruined old body still recognized the man, and he was the only one in all of Ithaca who did. He pricked up his ears. He tried to rise, and could not. And he wagged his tail, one last time, for the master he had never stopped waiting for.

Odysseus saw him. But because he was in disguise, surrounded by enemies, he could not run to him. He could not kneel in the dirt and hold him. He could not even say his name. He could only look at his oldest friend, and turn away so no one would see the tear running down his face.

That is the moment Briton Rivière painted in 1885: the old dog, the disguised king frozen mid-step, and the terrible, silent distance between them that love was not allowed to cross. Look at the dog’s face. Anyone who has ever loved something and waited for it understands that face completely, without a word of explanation.

And then, in Homer’s own lines:

The dark shadow of death closed down on Argos’ eyes, the instant he had seen Odysseus, twenty years away.

He had held on to life for one reason, and one reason only: he was waiting to see Odysseus come home. And the moment he finally did, he let go…

The ivory grew soft to his touch and, its hardness vanishing, gave and yielded beneath his fingers.

It is the oldest daydream in the history of art, and every sculptor since has been chasing it in one form or another. But Ovid needed a goddess to pull it off. The artists we are about to meet had only a chisel and years of their lives to devote to their craft.

And it is worth understanding what they were up against. Marble is a metamorphic rock, born under crushing pressure deep in the earth. It is heavy, cold, and brittle, and it does not forgive: cut too deep, and years of work fall to the floor in pieces. Everything it is by nature, hard, rigid, unyielding, is the exact opposite of what these sculptors demanded it become. Skin. Water. Cloth so fine you could pinch it between your fingers…

There is a word for what happens when the illusion holds. We say we are fascinated, and we have forgotten how strong that word once was. It comes from the Latin fascinare: to bewitch, to cast a spell, to hold a person motionless with nothing but a look.

What follows are 5 sculptures that do this to everyone who sees them. And knowing the truth does not help. You can be told, plainly, that all of it came out of a single block of stone. You will understand the words, but you will still not believe them…

1. The Veil That Isn’t There

We begin with a bust that has been astonishing people for nearly two centuries, and that almost nobody gets to see anymore…

It is called The Veiled Virgin, carved in Rome in the early 1850s by the Milanese sculptor Giovanni Strazza. The Virgin Mary is shown with her eyes closed, her head bowed in prayer. And over her face lies a veil.

Except there is no veil. There is only marble.

Strazza carved the cloth and the face beneath it out of the same block, and somehow the veil appears transparent. You can see her closed eyelids through it. You can see the line of her nose, her lips, the plait of her hair. The fabric clings, gathers, and falls in folds so fine that the eye simply gives up and accepts what it is being shown, that there must be a real veil there, laid over the stone, and that at any moment someone could lift it away.

When the statue arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in December 1856, Bishop John Thomas Mullock opened the crate from Rome and wrote a single line in his diary that says everything:

The face is veiled, and the figure and features are all seen. It is a perfect gem of art.

That is the whole miracle in one sentence.

There are other veiled busts scattered across Europe and North America, and Strazza was working in a tradition, veiled women were a favorite subject of Italian sculptors in his day. But none of the others come close to this one. And here is the strangest part of all: this masterpiece is not in Rome, or Florence, or the Vatican. In 1862 the bishop gave it away to a convent in Newfoundland, on the far edge of the North Atlantic, where it has remained ever since, in the care of the Presentation Sisters, not on public display, viewable only by appointment.

One of the most astonishing objects ever carved by human hands is sitting in a convent at the end of the world, behind a veil that does not exist…

2. A Woman Made of Water

A veil is one thing. Now watch what happens when a sculptor decides to carve water:

Her name is Undine, and she comes from a German novella of 1811 that half of Europe wept over. She is a water spirit, born without a soul, who can only gain one by being loved by a mortal man. So she marries a knight, and she gets her soul, and with it she gets everything a soul brings: love, grief, and the capacity to be destroyed. Then he betrays her. And the law of her own people is absolute, if her husband is unfaithful, she must be the one to kill him.

The American sculptor Chauncey Bradley Ives chose to carve the instant she rises out of the fountain.

In the book she appears “like a white column of water,” and that is precisely what he made: a woman ascending, wrapped head to foot in a veil that is soaking wet, water streaming off her, the fabric clinging to her body exactly the way real cloth clings when it is drenched.

But look at her face. In nearly every other version of this story, Undine comes back vengeful, a woman returning to punish the man who wronged her. Ives saw it differently. His Undine is not angry. She is grieving. She rises through the water with her arms lifted and her face full of sorrow, on her way to kill the man she loves, because the law of her kind gives her no choice at all.

She kills him, in the end, with a kiss, weeping as she does it…

And so the wet marble was never just a show of skill. Ives carved a woman made of the same water that now demands she kill the love of her life. He built the tragedy directly into the material, and that is the difference between a clever trick and a masterpiece.

3. Carving the Wind

Cloth is difficult. Water is harder. But how do you carve something that has no shape at all?

The West Wind depicts a woman caught in a gust. Her drapery lifts and streams out behind her. She is up on her toes, half turned, her eyes fixed on something far off, and she looks as though the next breath of wind will take her off the ground entirely. Everything in her body says motion. Everything about the material says the opposite.

What Thomas Ridgeway Gould was actually attempting here is truly unique. The subject of this sculpture is not the woman. It is the wind, and wind has no substance, no edges, and no form. It cannot be carved. So he did the only thing a sculptor can do: he carved the effect of it, the hair thrown back, the fabric flying, the body leaning into it, and he did it so convincingly that you can feel the gust hitting her, in a room with no air moving at all.

The critics of the day were beside themselves. The Chicago Tribune, in 1871, described her as “erect, listening, just ready for flight, with hair and drapery floating in the air.”

There is one more thing, and it is my favorite detail in the piece. She is standing on tiptoe. Hundreds of pounds of solid marble, balanced on the ends of a woman’s toes, which is a physical impossibility, stone is heavy and brittle and would snap in an instant. So Gould cheated, beautifully. He carved the drapery so that it flies back and touches the rock behind her, and that whisper of trailing fabric is secretly holding up the entire statue.

The thing that looks lightest in the whole sculpture, a piece of cloth caught in the breeze, is the thing bearing all the weight.

And the man who carved her sold fabric for a living. Gould was a Boston dry-goods merchant who had been modelling clay for years when the Civil War wiped out his business. It was the ruin that freed him. At forty-nine, with nothing left to lose, he moved his family to Florence, and the merchant who had spent his life measuring out bolts of cloth began carving it in marble.

4. The Man Dante Sent to Hell

Until now, the marble has been asked to be beautiful. Watch what happens when it is asked to horrify…

In 1288, in Pisa, a nobleman named Count Ugolino della Gherardesca was accused of treachery and locked in a tower with his children. The door was nailed shut, and no one ever came back for them. It should have ended there, as one more cruelty in a brutal age. But Dante froze him at the bottom of hell, in the ring reserved for men who betrayed their own country, and then did something worse: he let him tell his own story. Ugolino describes the days passing, the light through the slit in the wall, the children weakening. In his grief he bites down on his own hands. And his sons, watching their father gnaw at his fingers, misunderstand. They think he is starving.

So they offer him their bodies.

Father, it would hurt us far less if you ate us. You dressed us in this wretched flesh. Now take it back.

And then Dante stops. He never tells us what Ugolino did. The last thing the Count says is a line that scholars have been arguing over for seven hundred years: “then fasting had more power than grief”. It may mean he starved to death. Or it may mean that, in the end, hunger won.

That unanswered question is exactly where Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux placed his chisel.

Nearly five thousand pounds of Saint-Béat marble, and he turned it into flesh. This is the one thing marble can do that nothing else can. Bronze is dark, it holds the light on its surface. Marble lets the light sink in, so that the pale, polished stone reads as skin, soft and human, and the horror of it lands somewhere in your own body. When it was unveiled at the Paris Exposition of 1867, it caused a public sensation and made Carpeaux famous overnight.

And they were all looking at what you are looking at now: a father, in stone, frozen at the exact moment Dante refused to describe…

5. The Thing You Are Fighting Is Not Outside You

A naked man is bent double, twisted almost in half, every muscle locked hard as metal. His arms are stretched down and out in front of him, and his hands have taken hold of something and are ripping it up out of the ground.

You look for the monster, and there isn’t one. What he is straining against is a veil: a dark shroud spread across the earth itself, covering the ground like a burial cloth. That is how the sculptor chose to show us evil…

It is called L’umanità contro il male, “Humanity Against Evil.” Gaetano Cellini first exhibited the plaster at the Milan Exposition of 1906, where it won the Brera Academy’s Fumagalli Prize, and completed the marble in 1908. It stands today in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, and it is Rodin and Michelangelo fused into a single block.

Now notice what he did with the stone. The man’s body is polished to the softness of living skin. The shroud he fights is carved as heavy cloth, and here, at the very end, the marble comes full circle: the same illusion that gave us a transparent veil over a praying face now gives us evil itself. And where his body meets the ground, it turns into the shroud beneath him. He is rising out of the very darkness he is trying to tear away.

Cellini hid his face, too. He buried the head between the arms, so you never see the expression. Every writer who has stood in front of it says the same thing: he did it so that the man could be anyone. So that he could be you.

Then he cut two lines into the base:

Thus I will tear you out with my teeth and my nails, eternal pain that stabs at my heart.

The thing he is ripping from the ground is not out in the world. It is inside the man. What we are watching is not humanity fighting some external evil. It is a human being wrestling with the thing that lives in his own chest.

We would all prefer it were otherwise. It is far easier to believe that evil is something that happens elsewhere, done by other people, people who are nothing like us. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who had every reason to believe that, having watched an entire system built on the idea, wrote this in The Gulag Archipelago:

If only it were so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?

Cellini carved his answer decades before Solzhenitsyn asked the question. This man is willing. Look at him. He is not standing in triumph over a slain monster, he is clawing at a darkness he is himself made of, and refusing to stop.

And that is what makes this the right place to end. Because private struggle is never only private. What lives in one heart eventually finds its way out into the world, and once it does, it gathers power, it takes on a life of its own, and it turns into regimes that crush people. That was true in 1908, it was true when Solzhenitsyn was writing about the Gulag, and it is true right now, in ways most of us can see and few of us have the courage to name. And Cellini understood something we would rather not hear: evil is committed by the wicked, yes, but it triumphs through the rest of us. To keep spreading, it needs our silence, our fear, our small daily willingness to look away…

So there is only one question left, and this sculpture has been asking it for over a century: when it comes for you, will you go along with it, or will you fight?

We like to think we are the first people to live in the future. We picture everyone who came before living in a duller, less inventive world, as if they were waiting for us to be born and switch on the lights. It is one of the most persistent illusions we carry, and it is almost entirely wrong.

The irony is hidden in the word we use to describe ourselves. “Modern” comes from the Latin modernus, itself derived from modo, meaning “just now,” “a moment ago.” Every generation that ever lived has called itself modern and looked back on its grandparents as ancient history. The Romans felt modern. The Victorians felt modern. We are not the final destination all of history was walking toward. We are only the latest to mistake ourselves for it.

And the people we imagine as primitive were reaching for the very same stars we reach for now, and in more cases than we would ever guess, they arrived first.

We will begin at the turn of the twentieth century, and travel backward, further and further, until we reach a machine built almost two thousand years ago that does something you would swear could not possibly be that old…

1. We’ve Been Here Before

Let’s begin with something you drive past every day. We tend to think of the electric car as the ultimate symbol of the modern age, a twenty-first-century answer to a twenty-first-century problem. So it comes as a genuine shock to learn that in the year 1900, roughly a third of all the cars on American roads were electric…

By 1899, around ninety percent of New York City’s taxi cabs ran on batteries, a silent fleet humming through the streets while horses still pulled most of the traffic around them. London had its own electric cabs, nicknamed “Hummingbirds” for the sound they made:

Drivers loved them for the same reasons we do now: they were quiet, they were clean, they produced no smoke or fumes, and they didn’t require the violent, wrist-breaking hand-crank that gasoline cars of the era demanded just to start.

They were not slow, either. In 1899, an electric car called La Jamais Contente became the first vehicle in history to break sixty miles per hour.

Some models could travel a hundred miles on a single charge, a range many affordable EVs only matched again quite recently. There were even battery-swap stations for electric taxis, where a depleted battery could be exchanged for a fresh one in minutes, an idea being marketed as revolutionary by car companies today.

Then gasoline won…

The discovery of cheap oil, the arrival of Henry Ford’s mass-produced Model T, and the invention of the electric starter motor (which killed the dreaded hand-crank that had been gasoline’s biggest weakness) sent the electric car into a hundred-year sleep.

But make no mistake: the “car of the future” is one of the oldest cars there is.

2. The Invention Everyone Thought Was Witchcraft

In the late 1800s, a crowd gathered to watch a demonstration that convinced them they were witnessing magic, or telepathy, because the truth was so far ahead of its time that their minds had no box to put it in.

In the spring of 1958, a young man in his early twenties named Hunter S. Thompson sat down to answer a letter. His friend Hume Logan had written asking for advice about what to do with his life, and Thompson, not yet famous, not yet anything really, wrote back something wiser than his years. There is a paragraph in his reply I have never been able to forget:

A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance. [...] It is not necessary to accept the choices handed down to you by life as you know it. No one HAS to do something he doesn’t want to do for the rest of his life. But then again, if that’s what you wind up doing, by all means convince yourself that you HAD to do it. You’ll have lots of company.

That last line is the one that stings, because it is so easy to become part of that company without ever deciding to…

Most people never really choose their path. They follow the one that is already laid out for them. They make decisions that shape decades of their lives before their brains have even finished forming, which neuroscientists tell us doesn’t happen until around twenty-five. And so, somewhere along the way, a belief settles in: that the direction of your life has already been decided, that the important doors are behind you, and that other people, younger people, are so far ahead that starting now would only embarrass you.

I want to tell you, as plainly as I can, that this feeling is a lie. Not a comforting exaggeration, a lie.

There is a phrase that often gets shared online: “until death, all defeat is psychological.” It sounds dramatic until you test it against your own life. If you have ever, even once, changed something you were sure you couldn’t change, or succeeded after failing more times than you could count, then you already know it is true. Nothing is final while you still have tomorrow. And the strange beauty of tomorrow is that it hasn’t happened yet, which means it holds more possibility than everything you have already done combined. As Hemingway wrote in For Whom the Bell Tolls:

Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be. But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today.

You have probably seen the old line that life begins at forty, and that everything before it is just research. It has been printed on so many mugs that it is easy to dismiss. But it is closer to the truth than we let ourselves believe, and, as you are about to see, the number forty is far too cautious.

1. The Executive Who Lost Everything

Raymond Chandler did not set out to become one of the greatest novelists America ever produced. For most of his life, he wasn’t a writer at all. He was an oil company executive in Los Angeles, comfortable, well paid, and slowly coming apart, drinking too much, adrift in a career he didn’t love. Then the Great Depression tightened its grip, and in 1932, at the age of forty-four, he was fired.

It is hard to imagine a worse moment to lose everything. He was middle-aged, out of work, his savings draining away in the depths of the Depression. But Chandler did something astonishing. He decided, at forty-four, to become a writer, a real one, from scratch. He had no training and no track record. So he taught himself, studying pulp magazines and painstakingly imitating other writers’ stories to learn how the machinery of a sentence worked. He was slow and merciless with his own words. His first story took him five months to write.

That story sold to a pulp magazine called Black Mask in 1933. And in 1939, at the age of fifty-one, Raymond Chandler published his first novel, The Big Sleep, and introduced the world to a detective named Philip Marlowe. Today he is considered one of the founding fathers of modern crime fiction, an author whose sentences are taught in universities and whose influence runs through nearly every hard-boiled detective who came after him.

He had spent the first forty-four years of his life becoming the wrong thing. With almost nothing left to lose, he staked what remained on the person he might still become, and discovered that his best years were the ones nobody thought he had left.

2. A Whole Life Before the First Page

For most of her life, Laura Ingalls Wilder was not an author. She was a farmer’s wife. She had spent her childhood crossing the American frontier in a covered wagon, and her adulthood working the land at Rocky Ridge Farm in Missouri, alongside her husband, through decades of hardship, debt, and failed harvests.

She had written a little, columns for a small farming paper, starting in her forties. But it was only in her early sixties, with the Great Depression closing in and her savings gone, that she sat down to write the story of her life. She called it Pioneer Girl, an unflinching account of what the frontier had actually been like. Publishers turned it down, one after another. Too bleak, they said. Too bare. Too honest.

She could have stopped there. Most people would have. Instead, she rebuilt the entire thing from the ground up, retelling her memories through the eyes of a child, in the third person, as a story for young readers. In 1932, that book was published as Little House in the Big Woods. She was sixty-five.

Over the next eleven years, into her seventies, she wrote seven more. The Little House books have since sold more than sixty million copies and been translated into over forty languages, shaping how generations of children around the world imagine courage, family, and home. A farm woman who published nothing until the age when others retire wrote one of the most beloved series in the history of children’s literature…

3. Giving the First Fifty Years Away

Charles Bukowski spent most of his life as a failure. And he knew it.

As a young man he had tried to write, published a couple of stories, and then given up almost entirely, sinking into what he later called a “ten-year drunk,” drifting between cheap rooming houses and dead-end jobs across America. For roughly a decade after that, he worked as a clerk at the Los Angeles post office, sorting mail, a job he found soul-crushing and monotonous. He wrote poems at night, in obscurity, publishing here and there in tiny magazines, but by his late forties he had no money and almost nothing to show for his life. No sign that any of it had been worth it.

Then, in 1969, when Bukowski was forty-nine, a small publisher named John Martin made him an extraordinary offer: one hundred dollars a month, for life, if he would quit the post office and write full-time. It was barely enough to survive on, and it meant giving up the only steady thing he had. Bukowski described the choice with brutal clarity: “I have one of two choices,” he wrote, “stay in the post office and go crazy... or stay out here and play at writer and starve. I decided to starve.”

Less than a month later, he had written his first novel. He called it Post Office. He was fifty when it was published, and it changed the course of his life. Bukowski went on to write thousands of poems, six novels, and over sixty books, becoming one of the most widely read and imitated writers of the century, beloved especially by the outcasts and the working poor who saw their own lives in his.

Years later, thanking the publisher who had freed him, Bukowski wrote a line that says everything about starting late, admitting he had found himself as a writer only “after giving the first 50 years away.” He did not get those years back. He didn’t need to. He proved that the life you’ve wasted can’t stop you from becoming, at last, exactly who you were meant to be…

4. The Professor Who Doodled a World

By any ordinary measure, J.R.R. Tolkien had already made something of his life by the time he was forty. He was a respected Oxford professor, a philologist, an expert in ancient languages, with a wife and four children and a comfortable academic career. He was, in other words, exactly the sort of person who might reasonably decide that the shape of his life was already settled.

The story goes that one summer, while grading exam papers, he found a blank page left by a student, and, for no reason he could ever fully explain, wrote a single sentence on it: “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”

He did not know what a hobbit was. He had simply been inventing languages and mythologies for years, as a kind of private hobby, and telling stories to his own children, never imagining that this one would end up in print. But that one line grew, slowly, into a book. And in 1937, at the age of forty-five, Tolkien published The Hobbit.

It was a success, and his publisher asked for a sequel. Tolkien warned them it might take a while... It took seventeen years. He wrote it in the margins of a demanding full-time job, revising endlessly, doubting it often. When The Lord of the Rings was finally published, across 1954 and 1955, Tolkien was in his early sixties.

That book, begun as a middle-aged professor’s side project, went on to sell over a hundred and fifty million copies, invent modern fantasy as we know it, and reshape the imagination of the entire world.

Tolkien had a whole respectable life already. And still, the thing he is remembered for, the thing that outlived him and touched hundreds of millions of people, was something he started at forty-five, in the margins, when he could easily have told himself it was too late to begin…

5. Before the Sun Came Up

Toni Morrison did not have the luxury of waiting for the perfect conditions to write. By her late thirties she was divorced, raising two young sons entirely on her own, and working a demanding full-time job as an editor in New York. There was no quiet studio, no stretch of empty afternoons, no patron funding her art. There was a mother, two children, and a job.

So she made her time where none existed. She began waking before dawn, while her sons were still asleep, to write in the dark with a cup of coffee as the light slowly came up. It was the only part of the day that belonged to no one but her. Out of those stolen early mornings came her first novel, The Bluest Eye, published in 1970, when Morrison was thirty-nine years old. It sold barely two thousand copies at first.

But she kept going. Song of Solomon brought her national recognition when she was forty-six. Beloved, published when she was fifty-six, won the Pulitzer Prize and is now regularly called one of the greatest novels in American literature. And in 1993, at the age of sixty-two, Toni Morrison was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first Black woman in the world ever to receive it.

Her life is the answer to everyone who has ever said they have no time, no space, no freedom to chase the thing they love. Morrison had a job, two children, and no time to spare, and she built one of the great bodies of work of her century inside that crowded life, one dark morning at a time, before anyone else was awake…

6. The Teacher Who Waited a Lifetime

For twenty-seven years, Frank McCourt taught English in New York City public high schools. He was, by all accounts, a wonderful teacher, funny, warm, a natural storyteller with a thick Irish brogue. But the whole time, there was a book inside him he could not get out. He had tried once, back in 1969, to write the story of his brutal, impoverished childhood in Limerick. He couldn’t do it. He didn’t yet have the voice. So he threw it away and kept teaching.

He did not publish his first book until he was sixty-six years old, already retired. When the words finally came, they came in the voice of the child he had been, and the result was Angela’s Ashes. It won the Pulitzer Prize. It sold millions of copies in dozens of languages and became one of the most beloved memoirs ever written.

McCourt knew exactly what he had almost let slip away. “F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives,” he once remarked. “I think I’ve proven him wrong. And all because I refused to settle for a one-act existence.”

7. The Woman Who Began at Seventy-Eight

Anna Mary Robertson Moses had lived an entire life before she ever picked up a paintbrush. She had grown up on a farm, worked as a hired girl, married, raised her children, buried five of them in infancy, and spent decades doing the endless labor of rural life. In her later years she made small embroidered pictures for friends. Then, at seventy-eight, arthritis made it too painful to hold a needle. So she decided to try painting instead.

She had no training. She painted the world of her childhood from memory, tidy fields and barns, on whatever she could find: old canvas, fireboard, house paint. She entered a few at the county fair, alongside her jams and preserves. The jams won prizes. The paintings went unnoticed. Then, in 1938, a passing art collector spotted some of her work in a drugstore window in a small town, and bought all of them.

Within a year, three of her paintings were hanging in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The farm woman the press affectionately dubbed “Grandma Moses” became a national sensation, her scenes reproduced on millions of greeting cards, her face on the cover of Time. She took none of it too seriously. If she hadn’t taken up painting, she once said with characteristic plainness, she “would have raised chickens.”

She went on to paint more than fifteen hundred works, and kept at it almost until the day she died, at the age of one hundred and one. The years everyone assumed she had run out of turned out to be the richest of her entire life.

8. The Man Who Sold One Painting

Vincent van Gogh did not pick up a brush until he was twenty-seven years old. Before that, he had failed at nearly everything he tried. He had failed as an art dealer, failed as a teacher, failed as a bookseller, and failed, most painfully, as a missionary, cast out by the church he had tried to serve. By his late twenties he was, by every worldly measure, a man whose life had not amounted to anything.

And then, with the constant support of his brother Theo, who sent him money and paint and belief when Vincent had none of his own, he began to paint. He had roughly ten years left to live. In that single decade, he produced around nine hundred paintings and more than a thousand drawings, at times finishing nearly one canvas a day, pouring into them a way of seeing the world that no one had ever imagined before.

Just one of those paintings found a buyer while he lived: The Red Vineyard, sold in Brussels for a few hundred francs…

He died at thirty-seven, believing himself a failure, convinced the world had no use for what he had made. In a letter to his brother Theo, he wrote:

Someone has a great fire in his soul and nobody ever comes to warm themselves at it, and passers-by see nothing but a little smoke at the top of the chimney and then go on their way.

He never got to see the museums built to hold his work, the millions of people who would one day stand in silence before The Starry Night, and the way his name would become a byword for genius itself. Everything he is loved for happened after he was gone.

There is something almost unbearable in that, but there is something luminous in it too. Van Gogh started late, worked in near-total obscurity, and was never once told, in life, that any of it mattered. And yet he never stopped, because he had finally found the thing he was meant to do. The world caught up eventually. It always does. It simply does not always do it in time for us to see, which is why the only real choice is to begin, and to leave the rest to time…

Every one of these 8 people arrived at their calling late, and by a different road. Some were pushed there by failure, some by loss, some by nothing more than the realization that they were not done yet. But all of them are proof of something we forget the moment we need it most: that what separates the people who actually do it from the people who always intended to is simply that, at some point, the first group began.

We tell ourselves that the door has closed, that the best years are spent, that the people ahead of us got there first and there is no point starting now. But the years behind you were never the ones that mattered. The only years you can do anything with are the ones still in front of you, and those are entirely yours.

So begin. Write the first page. Sign up for the class. Make the call. Start the business, the painting, the life you have been carrying around inside you for years, half-afraid to say out loud that you still want it. You will not feel ready. No one ever does. The fear you feel standing at the edge of it is not a sign to turn back; it is only the proof that this is something you love, and that your time is finally here.

It is not too late. It was never too late. And as Thoreau promised, all the way back in Walden, the reward for daring it is greater than we let ourselves believe:

If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.

You can fail even at the life you never wanted, so you might as well chase the one you love…

Most photographs from the 1970s share a particular quality of light: a warmth, a softness, a faint golden cast. Spend long enough with them and they stop feeling like history and start feeling like memory. If you lived through those years, they bring back something you recognize. If you did not, they make you miss it anyway: a way of being together that we have lost somewhere along the way. People smiled differently. They seem freer, unguarded in a way we rarely are now. And they always looked at one another, because there was nothing else asking to be looked at…

What they had, and what we have mostly lost, is something I stumbled on this week and have not stopped thinking about: unstructured time. For almost all of human history, boredom was not a problem to be solved but a doorway. It pushed the brain into what scientists now call the default mode network, the kind of background processing where we consolidate memories, imagine other people’s lives, dream up ideas, and slowly assemble a sense of who we are. Staring out a window, waiting for a bus, sitting at the table after dinner with nothing to do, the mind was doing some of its most important work. Boredom, it turns out, was the engine of the inner life.

The 1970s were full of it. Children were released into that emptiness every day after school and from dawn to dusk all summer, and researchers now believe the young need at least as much of that unstructured time as the organized kind, if not far more. But it is almost the first thing we have engineered out of modern life. Today, the moment we are left alone with our own thoughts, we reach for a screen, afraid, perhaps, of meeting the person waiting for us in the silence…

That silence was easier to find back then, because the whole world moved more slowly. A long-distance call cost real money, so people still wrote letters and waited weeks for an answer. A photograph was an act of faith: you pressed the shutter and would not see the result for days, so you only photographed what mattered. No one documented their breakfast. No one performed their life for an audience that was not in the room.

Then it all changed, the way these things always do: not with a single moment you could point to, but slowly, invisibly, until one day the world in these photographs was simply gone. Joan Didion once wrote that “it is easy to see the beginnings of things, and harder to see the ends.” That is the tragedy of any era. No one inside it can feel it ending. And I have come to believe we are living through another of those turnings right now, in real time, without noticing it.

So look closely at the images below. We cannot go back. But give them your attention and they begin to show you how much can change in a single lifetime, and how the things we trade away are so rarely the things we ever meant to lose.

1. The Crookedest Street in the World

This is Lombard Street in San Francisco, in 1975. The famous switchback section, the one that draws around two million visitors a year today, captured in a single perfect frame of afternoon light…

What makes the photograph remarkable is how it was taken. There were no drones in 1975, no phones held overhead, no easy way to get above the scene at all. So the photographer, Mike Fitzpatrick, simply climbed a telephone pole. “I was in my early 20s then and quite fit,” he later recalled. “I don’t remember how high I climbed, but probably about 10 feet.” He shot it on an Argus 35mm camera, on a color slide he still owns to this day.

And here is the small, lovely detail that makes the whole era come alive. While he was up there, the other tourists did not film him to post on social media about the strange man on the pole. They handed their cameras up to him. As Fitzpatrick remembered it, they “insisted on handing their cameras up for me to take photos for them too.” Strangers, trusting a stranger balanced on a pole with the only copy of their vacation, because there was no other way to get the shot, and because that is simply what you did.

He went back in 2008, in his mid-fifties, and he took another picture of the same spot:

This time he did not climb the pole. He stood on a trash can and held the camera as high as he could. And in some ways, the street itself has barely changed at all. It is everything else that has…

2. These Need to Be Brought Back

If you flipped through home magazines in the 1970s, you kept meeting the same strange and wonderful feature: the living room floor dropped away into a sunken, carpeted hollow, ringed with one continuous sofa, with everyone settled down inside it facing one another. They called it the conversation pit.

The idea had been around since a 1952 house designed by the architect Eero Saarinen, but it was in the 1970s that it reached the peak of its popularity, turning up in homes across the country in deep oranges, browns, and golds. Saarinen had a particular reason for sinking the seating into the floor. He wanted to get rid of what he called the “slum of legs” — the scatter of table and chair legs that cluttered an ordinary room — and replace it with a single, clean, communal space where people simply sank down together.

And that is the part worth pausing on. The whole purpose of the room, its only purpose, was to bring people physically closer and turn them toward each other. Not toward a television. Not toward a fireplace. Toward each other’s faces. The name said it plainly: a pit built for conversation. You climbed down into it, and once you were down there, the only thing left to do was talk, and listen, and be with whoever was down there with you.

It is hard to imagine a piece of architecture less suited to the way we live now. We have spent the last few decades redesigning our homes around the screen: the seats angled toward the television, then toward our own separate glowing rectangles. The conversation pit belonged to a world that still built its rooms, quite literally, around the radical idea that the best thing in any house was the other people in it. As Winston Churchill once put it:

We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.

3. When the World Had Color

Look at a street scene from the 1970s and the first thing that hits you, before the clothes or the hairstyles, is the color. The cars are orange, avocado green, mustard yellow, turquoise, deep plum. In 1970, you could order a Dodge in shades the company gave names like Plum Crazy, Go Mango, Lemon Twist, and Lime Light.

Now compare it to the parking lot outside your window. According to BASF and Axalta, the two largest automotive paint manufacturers in the world, around 80% of new cars today are finished in white, black, gray, or silver. The single most popular car color on earth, white, has held the top spot every year since 2011.

The bold, saturated hues that once filled the roads have nearly disappeared, surviving as rare options on a handful of sporty trims.

And it is not only cars. The same thing is happening almost everywhere. Phones and laptops in “space gray” and “midnight.” Furniture in greige and taupe. The logos of the world’s biggest companies, once bright and distinct, flattening into the same minimal sans-serif gray.

We have built a world that is easier to mass-produce, easier to resell, easier to make inoffensive to everyone, everywhere, all at once. And in the process we have slowly drained the color out of it. The 1970s still carried the spirit of a culture that was not afraid of color, that let a thing be loud, and strange, and unmistakably itself…

4. You Would Never Guess Where This Is

Nothing happens to anyone that he is not fitted by nature to bear.

It is an easy idea to resist, especially when the pain is your own. Said carelessly, it can even sound cruel. But Marcus was not claiming that people never break, that every loss is fair, or that suffering is somehow deserved. He meant that life will bring you things you never chose and cannot control, and that there is more strength in you than the pain allows you to see. We almost always underestimate what we are able to survive.

I have been writing this newsletter long enough to know how many of you are carrying something heavy: the loss of someone you loved, an illness, a private grief you have never put into words. It is the most delicate subject there is, and I have never felt it was my place to preach about it, or to offer anyone advice. But pain is the one thing none of us escapes. And perhaps that is exactly why it binds us together more closely than almost anything else can…

The one thing that has ever truly helped me is the last thing you want to do when you are hurting: to turn outward, instead of inward. To be of service. To set down your own ego and give something to someone else. Sorrow, left alone, becomes an echo chamber, a room where your pain keeps circling back to itself. The surest way I have ever found out of that room is to lose myself in helping another person. As Meister Eckhart put it:

Everything would be given to the person who completely renounced himself, even for a single moment.

But wiser people than me have spoken about pain far more beautifully than I ever could. So below I have gathered 5 of the most profound things ever written about it, paired with 5 of the most moving paintings ever made in response to it. 1. The Fear No One Warns You About

We begin where grief itself begins: in the body, before the mind has caught up.

In 1960, C.S. Lewis lost his wife, Joy Davidman, to cancer. They had married late, but loved each other fiercely. In the weeks after her death, Lewis kept a journal, scribbling into old notebooks simply to survive the days. He never intended to publish it. When he finally did, he released it under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk. The little book is called A Grief Observed, and it opens with a sentence that has startled the bereaved for sixty years:

No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. I am not afraid, but the sensation is like being afraid. The same fluttering in the stomach, the same restlessness, the yawning. I keep on swallowing.

It is the truest thing anyone has written about the first days of loss. We expect grief to feel like sadness. No one warns us that it arrives as something closer to terror, lodged in the stomach, in the breath, in the hands. Lewis goes on:

At other times it feels like being mildly drunk, or concussed. There is a sort of invisible blanket between the world and me. I find it hard to take in what anyone says.

Anyone who has grieved knows that invisible blanket. The strange muffling of the world, the way other people’s voices seem to reach you through water, the sense of being present and absent at once. And then comes the loneliest line of all:

Yet I want the others to be about me. I dread the moments when the house is empty. If only they would talk to one another and not to me.

There is no resolution here, no comfort offered, and that is exactly why it helps. Lewis is not trying to fix anything. He is simply telling the truth, and in telling it, he reaches across sixty years and lays a hand on the shoulder of everyone who has ever felt this and believed they were the only one.

To read it in the middle of your own grief is to understand, perhaps for the first time, that the pain is not something gone wrong in you, but simply the shape love takes when it has nowhere left to go.

That same ache lives in Frederic William Burton’s The Meeting on the Turret Stairs, painted in 1864. It illustrates a medieval Danish ballad. Hellelil, a king’s daughter, has fallen in love with Hildebrand, the prince assigned to guard her; when her father discovers it, he orders her seven brothers to kill him. Burton chose to paint not the bloodshed that follows, but the moment just before it: the lovers passing on a narrow turret stair, in their last instant together before Hildebrand goes out to die…

The knight lowers his head to press his lips to the girl’s bare arm. She turns away, unable to look at him. They do not embrace. They barely touch. George Eliot, who stood before this painting and never forgot it, wrote that “the face of the knight is the face of a man to whom the kiss is a sacrament.” The subject, she marveled, “might have been made the most vulgar thing in the world,” and yet Burton “has raised it to the highest pitch of refined emotion.”

Everything unbearable about the image lives in that fraction of space between them: the love that is fully present, and the loss that is already certain.

Burton understood what Lewis understood. That the deepest grief is only ever the price of the deepest love, and that no one who has truly loved is ever spared it.

2. The Slow Inventory of Loss

There is no greater pain than the loss of a child… it reverses the order the world is supposed to follow.

In 1896, while Mark Twain was traveling abroad, his daughter Susy — twenty-four years old, luminous, the one he believed had inherited the most of him — died of meningitis in the family home in Hartford. Twain was an ocean away. He learned of it by cablegram. Years later, writing his autobiography, he described the moment the news reached him, and in doing so left us a precise account of what a great loss does to the mind:

It is one of the mysteries of our nature that a man, all unprepared, can receive a thunder-stroke like that and live. There is but one reasonable explanation of it. The intellect is stunned by the shock, and but gropingly gathers the meaning of the words. The power to realize their full import is mercifully wanting. The mind has a dumb sense of vast loss — that is all.

A dumb sense of vast loss. Anyone who has received that kind of news knows what he is describing: in the first hours, you do not feel the whole of it, because you cannot. The mind, to keep you alive, refuses to let the full weight land all at once. But then Twain goes further, and gives the truest description of grief’s long aftermath that I have ever read:

A man’s house burns down. The smoking wreckage represents only a ruined home that was dear through years of use and pleasant associations. By and by, as the days and weeks go on, first he misses this, then that, then the other thing. And, when he casts about for it, he finds that it was in that house. It is irrevocably lost. It will be years before the tale of lost essentials is complete, and not till then can he truly know the magnitude of his disaster.

This is the thing no one warns you about. Grief is not a single event but a slow inventory. You do not lose the person all at once. You lose them again and again, in a thousand small discoveries, for years — every time you reach for something that was in that house, and find that it is gone.

The death happens in a single moment. The loss takes the rest of your life…

No artist understood this better than Käthe Kollwitz. In 1914, her younger son Peter was killed in the first weeks of the First World War, at the age of eighteen. She spent her remaining years returning to that wound in her art. Her 1903 piece titled Woman with Dead Child — made even before her own son’s death, as if she had foreseen it — shows a mother curled around the body of her child, not weeping prettily but gripping him with her whole body, her face buried in him, the two figures fused into a single dark mass of grief.

And for eighteen years she carved a memorial for Peter, The Grieving Parents, two figures kneeling in sorrow that still stands today in the war cemetery in Belgium where he is buried.

She spent decades counting what the fire had taken. And out of that long inventory of loss, she built the one thing pain had not destroyed: the proof that he had been loved...

3. Better to Have Loved

When Alfred Tennyson was a young man at Cambridge, he had a friend named Arthur Henry Hallam — brilliant, beloved, engaged to Tennyson’s sister, and, by every account, the person Tennyson loved most in the world. In 1833, with no warning, Hallam died of a sudden brain hemorrhage. He was twenty-two.

The loss broke something in Tennyson so completely that he spent the next seventeen years writing his way through it, in fragments, returning again and again to the same grief, until those fragments became one of the greatest poems of all time: In Memoriam A.H.H.

It is out of those long years that the most famous lines on loss ever written in English emerged:

I hold it true, whate’er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
‘Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

We have heard the last two lines so often that they have nearly worn smooth, like a coin passed through too many hands. But look at the line above them, the one almost no one quotes: I feel it, when I sorrow most. Tennyson is saying that it is precisely in his deepest grief — not in spite of it, but inside it — that he knows the loving was worth the losing.

The pain does not cancel the love. The pain is the proof of it. To grieve this much is simply the receipt for having loved that much, and he would not give the love back to escape the loss.

In 1875, George Frederic Watts painted that same truth in his allegory Love and Death. He had watched a gifted young nobleman waste away despite all the devoted care of his wife, and the image came to him: a great shrouded figure, Death, advancing slowly toward the doorway of a house, and a smaller winged figure, Love, throwing itself against that inevitable approach in a doomed attempt to bar the way.

Watts was careful to explain that Love is not holding Death back, for nothing can. “I wish to suggest,” he said, “the passionate though unavailing struggle to meet the inevitable.”

It is all of us, in the end, standing in that doorway. We love anyway, knowing exactly how the story has to end.

And perhaps that is the bravest thing a human being ever does. Because as Dostoevsky wrote in The Brothers Karamazov:

What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love.

The grief is terrible. But the alternative — a life that never risked loving at all, and so never had anything to lose — is the only thing worse…

4. The Breaking of the Shell

So far we have stayed close to the rawness of loss. But there is another way of looking at pain and it is the one that begins, slowly, to turn grief toward meaning.

There is an old Chinese parable that opens the door to it. A farmer’s only horse runs away, and his neighbors come to say how terrible it is. “Maybe,” the old man replies. The next day the horse returns, bringing several wild horses with it, and the neighbors come to celebrate his good fortune. “Maybe,” he says again. His son tries to tame one of the wild horses, is thrown, and breaks his leg. Terrible luck, the neighbors say. “Maybe.” Then the army comes through the village to conscript every able-bodied young man for a war, and passes the son by, because of his broken leg. The parable could run forever, because that is what life does. We almost never know, in the moment, whether what has happened to us is the end of the story, or the beginning of another one we cannot yet see.

This is not to say that suffering is good, or that loss is secretly a gift in disguise. Only that pain, however unwanted, changes us, and not every change it leaves behind is damage. No one expressed this more beautifully than the Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran, in the chapter “On Pain” from his 1923 masterpiece The Prophet:

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

The seed cannot grow while it is still sealed inside its hard shell. The shell has to break, and the breaking surely feels to the seed like destruction, like the end of everything. But it is the opposite of an end. It is the only way the green shoot ever reaches the light. Leonard Cohen said the same thing in his song Anthem: “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Gibran does not pretend the breaking is painless; he only refuses to call it meaningless. He goes on:

And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.

Not the absence of winter. The serenity to live through it, trusting that the season will turn, as seasons do. That is what the parable and the poet are both pointing toward: not a denial of pain, but a longer view of it, wide enough to hold the possibility that what feels like ruin today may be, in some way you cannot yet see, the breaking open of something that needed to grow.

No painter captured this better than Ivan Aivazovsky, the great master of the sea. In his storm paintings, a small ship is tossed on enormous black waves beneath a sky torn apart by tempest — and yet, almost always, on the horizon, the artist places a single break in the clouds where the sun is rising, laying a path of gold across the very water that moments ago looked only deadly.

He painted the storm and the dawn in the same frame, because he understood that they are never as separate as they feel from inside the tempest. The light is already coming. You usually just cannot see it yet from the trough of the wave…

5. Life Has Not Forgotten You

The last word belongs to Rainer Maria Rilke, who in Letters to a Young Poet wrote about suffering with more wisdom and compassion than anyone before or since.

In 1904, Rilke was writing to a young cadet who had confided his sadnesses and self-doubt, and he replied with what would become one of the most consoling passages ever written about the hard and frightening things in life:

Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us.

It is a staggering reversal. The thing that frightens us most, the grief that looms over us like a monster, may not be a monster at all, but something waiting to transform, if only we can find the courage to stop running from it and turn to face it. What comes next is, to me, one of the greatest lines he ever wrote:

You must think that something is happening with you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall.

Life has not forgotten you. Whatever you are carrying right now, however invisible you feel inside it, you have not been abandoned by the world. You are still being held.

There is a painting by Caspar David Friedrich, Woman before the Rising Sun, that gives me this exact feeling. A lone woman stands in an open field at dawn, her back to us, her arms slightly lifted and opening, as though she is being met by the light rather than merely watching it. The sun has not fully risen. The land around her is still half in shadow. But she faces it, open-armed, the way a person finally turns to face what they have survived.

Friedrich never tells us what she has been through. He does not need to. We recognize the posture. It is the moment after the worst of the night, when you are still standing, and the light is beginning, very slowly, to return…

And so we come to the end, though grief, of course, has no neat ending.

If there is one thing all five of these voices seem to agree on, it is this: there is no way around pain, and no way over it. The only way out is through. As Rilke wrote in The Book of Hours:

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.

No feeling is final. Not even this one. The grief that feels permanent today is not the last thing you will ever feel, however much it insists otherwise.

And there is something on the other side of it, something the writers in this piece kept circling back to: that survival alone is not the point. As Dostoevsky wrote in The Brothers Karamazov:

The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.

Pain hollows us out, but what it carves can be filled again, with purpose, with love, with the slow rediscovery of why we are here at all.

And here, at the very end, I will mention again the only thing I have ever truly known to help. When your own pain becomes too heavy to carry alone, turn it outward. Find someone else who is hurting, and help them. It will not erase what happened to you. But it will remind you, in the only way that ever works, that you are still here, still useful, still capable of love, still part of the long human chain of people holding one another up through the dark.

The Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini once said:

A different language is a different vision of life.

And how true that is. We tend to treat words as if they were windows, clear and neutral, things we look straight through to reach the world waiting on the other side. But words are not windows. They are closer to images: approximations drawn by fallible hands, rough sketches of experiences too large and too strange to fit through the narrow gate of the lips.

The words we happen to inherit draw the borders of what we are able to notice, even of what we are able to feel. Linguists have a name for this idea: they call it linguistic relativity, and there is real evidence behind it. For example, speakers of languages that carry specific words for certain colors can actually distinguish those shades faster than people whose languages fold them all together.

Your native tongue is not only a way of describing reality. To a degree most of us never realize, it helps determine which parts of reality you notice at all…

And there is something even stranger underneath this. Ask people how they think, and you will get wildly different answers. Some hear a constant inner voice narrating their lives in full sentences; others think almost entirely in pictures, and only translate them into words when they have to speak. A few report almost no inner monologue at all. We assume everyone’s interior life runs on the same machinery as our own, and we are simply wrong. Which means that when a feeling rises up in you that you cannot name, the problem may not be that the feeling is vague, but that your language never built a door to it.

Here is the consolation. Somewhere, in some other tongue, that door very often already exists. Another culture, on the far side of the world, felt the exact thing you could not name, and gave it a single word.

What follows are 6 of those words. None of them translates cleanly into English. All of them describe something you have almost certainly felt. My hope is that by the end, you will not only recognize yourself in them, but carry one or two of them with you, like keys you did not know you were missing…

1. The Hardest Word to Translate

At the very southern tip of South America, where Chile and Argentina splinter into a maze of cold islands battered by the sea, lies the place the early European sailors called Tierra del Fuego, the Land of Fire. For thousands of years it was home to the Yaghan people, who lived as nomads along those frozen channels. Their language belongs to no family but its own, an isolate, with no known relative anywhere on earth. And it gave the world what the Guinness Book of World Records once called the most succinct word ever recorded.

The word is mamihlapinatapai. It describes a look: the silent look exchanged between two people who both want the same thing to happen, who both sense the other wants it too, and who are each waiting, hoping, that the other will be brave enough to begin...

You know this look. It is the breath before a first kiss, the instant when every thought either person has ever had arrives at once and freezes them both in place, a hundred invisible hands pulling them back from each other, each one wanting it, each one afraid to be the one who moves first.

It is the moment everyone who has ever been truly in love carries with them for the rest of their lives…

And perhaps that is why the word moves us so deeply. Because a shared look is where love begins, but it is not where love lives. As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote:

Love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction.

Mamihlapinatapai is the instant before that turn: the last moment of two separate people, just before they decide to face the world as one.

But what makes the word so remarkable is where it comes from. Cristina Calderón, the last person who spoke Yaghan fluently, died in 2022, and took with her the last living version of a language thousands of years in the making. Out of all of it, the word the world chose to keep is one about hesitation, about the thing left unsaid, about everything we lose by waiting for someone else to go first. There is something to learn in that. A tiny community at the bottom of the world found a word for a feeling every one of us knows, while the great languages of the world, spoken by billions, never managed to name it…

I have always struggled to make sense of time, and the older I get, the more it seems to me that a photograph is the closest thing we have to a time machine…

A photo does not simply record what something looked like, but instead catches a single instant that will never come again and lets us hold it in our hands decades, sometimes centuries later. As Karl Lagerfeld put it:

What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.

And something strange happens when you set two of those frozen instants beside each other: the same place, the same face, separated by years. The distance between them is where you suddenly feel time itself. It stops being an idea and becomes something you can almost reach out and touch.

Because time is the strangest thing we live inside. We never actually see it move. We only ever see what it leaves behind: the ruin of a great wonder, or a line on your own face that you notice one morning for the first time, though it had been forming for years while you were busy looking at everything else.

1. Wounds of the Earth

Across the fields of northern France and Belgium, the Western Front stretched for more than 700 kilometers of mud, wire, and men. Over four years, roughly 1.5 billion artillery shells were fired along it. When the guns finally stopped in November 1918, the landscape had been so completely destroyed that farmers returned to find their villages and fields had vanished.

A century later, the grass has grown back…

The trenches are still there — you can even trace their lines from the air — but nature has drawn a soft green veil over all of it. The craters where shells exploded are now gentle dips in a meadow. The places where men lived and died underground are covered in wildflowers.

There is something in this comparison that is almost impossible to sit with. All that suffering, all that terror, all those lives, and the earth simply absorbed it and moved on. What is left is an ordinary field. And if you did not know what had happened there, you might walk through without a second thought…

2. Hidden in Plain Sight

When this photograph of El Castillo was taken in 1863, the most famous pyramid in the Maya world was barely visible. It was a mass of stone almost entirely swallowed by jungle, indistinguishable from the surrounding vegetation.

The Maya had abandoned Chichen Itza around the 13th century, and for hundreds of years the rainforest had been doing what rainforests do: reclaiming every surface it could reach.

Serious excavation did not begin until 1924, when archaeologist Sylvanus Morley arrived with a Carnegie Institution team and spent years pulling the jungle back, stone by stone.

Today, El Castillo dominates the vast plaza with commanding majesty, drawing more than two million visitors a year. There is something reassuring in knowing that what is buried is not always lost, and that some things can be brought back into the light if someone is willing to do the work.

3. The Lion Beneath the Sand

For most of the thousands of years it has been on this earth, the Great Sphinx of Giza was not the monument we know today. Sometime around 2100 BC, the desert began to swallow it. The wind drove sand up against the stone, year after year, century after century, until the entire body of the lion was buried up to the shoulders and only the great head remained visible above the dunes.

That is how travelers, pilgrims, and photographers saw it for thousands of years: a sad, weatherworn face staring out of an ocean of sand, with no body, no paws, no monument beneath it.

The first serious modern clearing did not happen until 1817, and the full excavation was only completed between 1925 and 1936, under the French engineer Émile Baraize, who spent eleven years pulling the desert back from a creature that had been waiting underneath it the whole time.

To look at the two photographs side by side is to realize that the Sphinx we think we have always known is, in a sense, less than a hundred years old.

4. The Face of War

In June 1941, a young man named Evgeny Stepanovich Kobytev sat for a photograph. He was thirty years old and he had just graduated from art school in Kyiv. A few days later, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, and Kobytev set down his brushes and enlisted in the Red Army. He fought. He was wounded. He was captured and held in a German prison camp where prisoners died of starvation. In 1943, he escaped, and rejoined the war. In 1945, he came home.

The day he returned, he sat for another photograph…

The same man, exactly four years older, and the difference isn’t so much something you see as something you feel. The first picture looks at you. The second one looks through you.

The two photographs hang side by side today in the Andrei Pozdeev Museum in Krasnoyarsk, and they say something about what war does to a person that no-one has ever quite managed to put into words…

5. Natural or Man-Made?

In photographs taken in the late nineteenth century, the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacán looks like an oddly symmetrical hill. Trees and shrubs cover its slopes. A path winds toward something that might be a summit. There is nothing in the landscape that announces the building underneath, only the suspicion that the slope is just a little too even and the lines a little too straight.

To give you an idea, this is a lithograph from 1870:

The pyramid had been hidden beneath earth and vegetation for nearly a thousand years. In 1905, Mexican archaeologist Leopoldo Batres began the first major excavation of the site under the orders of President Porfirio Díaz, and over the next five years, he pulled an entire civilization back out of the ground.

Today the pyramid rises 66 meters above the Avenue of the Dead. It’s the third-largest pyramid in the world.

And it is impossible not to ask: how does something this enormous become invisible? The answer, it turns out, is slowly, and then completely, the way most things we stop paying attention to eventually disappear.

6. Mount St. Helens

On the morning of 18 May 1980, at 8:32 AM, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook the north face of Mount St. Helens, and in the next few seconds the largest landslide ever recorded in history slid 1,300 feet of mountain off itself and into the valley below.

The volcano went from 9,677 feet tall to 8,365 feet in a single morning. Fifty-seven people were killed. The lateral blast that followed traveled at over a thousand kilometers an hour, flattened four billion board feet of timber, and turned 600 square kilometers of forest into ash and bare earth.

Photographs from before the eruption show a perfectly symmetrical, snow-capped peak so beautiful that locals called it the Fujisan of America. Photographs from after show a hollowed-out crater, as though something had taken a bite out of the sky:

The most unsettling thing about looking at the two images is not the destruction, but the speed: a mountain that had been standing there, untouched, for thousands of years, lost an entire summit in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee.

7. The Price of Saving a Country

In 1860, the year he was elected president, Abraham Lincoln sat for a photograph. He looks lean, alert, sharply lit, with the precise gaze of a country lawyer who has just won the largest argument of his life. Five years later, in February 1865, the photographer Alexander Gardner asked him to sit again.

By then the Civil War had killed more than 600,000 Americans, his eleven-year-old son Willie had died in the White House, and Lincoln himself had been carrying the weight of the war and the survival of a divided nation for four straight years.

The man in Gardner’s photograph has aged almost beyond belief:

His face is hollow, his eyes deeply set, the lines beneath them carved in. There is even a faint, sad half-smile, as though he was beginning to allow himself to imagine the end of it. The image is from Lincoln’s last posed photo session. Nine weeks later, he was dead.

His secretary John Hay, who saw him every day, wrote that by the end, “in mind, body, and nerves he was a very different man.”

8. Fifty Summers Later

On August 15, 1969, a young woman named Judy was driving to a music festival in upstate New York when her car broke down on the Tappan Zee Bridge. A Volkswagen pulled over, full of young men heading to the same place, and offered her and her friends a ride. One of them was named Jerry. By the time they reached the festival grounds and set up camp, something had already happened between them. As Judy later put it, “we basically were together from that point on.”

They had known each other less than 48 hours when, soaking wet, they were photographed huddled under a blanket in the rain — though they would not discover that picture for another fifty years, when they spotted their own 22-year-old faces in a PBS documentary.

By then they had two sons, five grandchildren, and half a century of marriage behind them, and to mark the anniversary, they recreated that rain-soaked photograph, fifty years older, wrapped in a blanket once more. Set the two side by side and you are looking at the entire arc of a life: two strangers in the rain who had no idea what they were starting, and the same two people, fifty years on, who turned a broken-down car on a bridge into everything that followed…

It is a beautiful thing to see. And it is also a reminder that the clock never stops turning. Youth passes in what feels like a single breath, and with every day that goes by, the past grows heavier and the road ahead grows shorter. We spend so much of our lives caught between the ache of what we remember and the fear of what we cannot yet see, that we forget the only place we have ever actually lived is the present. And though they may be among the coldest words Marcus Aurelius ever wrote in his Meditations, after nearly two thousand years they have only grown truer:

Soon you will have forgotten the world, and soon the world will have forgotten you.

So what do we do with that? My advice this morning will not be motivational or productive — that word we have somehow turned into a religion. It is simply what I feel to be true as I sit here writing these words. We are all living on borrowed time, and none of us knows how much remains. So put off until tomorrow the things you never wanted to do anyway, and do today, now, the thing you have always wanted to do but were too afraid to begin — the thing that frightens you precisely because some part of you knows it matters.

I will leave you with the words of the late Robin Williams, from a monologue in the film Jack that I have carried with me ever since I first heard it:

As we come to the end of this phase of our life, we find ourselves trying to remember the good times, and trying to forget the bad times. And we find ourselves thinking about the future. We start to worry, thinking, what am I going to do? Where am I going to be in ten years? But I say to you, ‘Hey, look at me, please, don’t worry so much.’ Because in the end, none of us have very long on this earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky, when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day, make a wish. Think of me. Make your life spectacular.

The world will never starve for want of wonders; but only for want of wonder.

I think he was right. The wonders are still here. We are the ones who have gotten busy, distracted, and a little numb. We scroll past photographs of places that should stop us in our tracks and feel almost nothing, because a screen flattens everything it touches into the same small rectangle of light. And lately there is something else that bothers me even more. Call it the AI problem: we have started to mistrust anything that looks too astonishing to be real. The sad part is that, more often than not, we are right to…

But every now and then a place breaks through anyway. You see it, and you immediately ask the same two questions: how is that real, and how did people make it?

Because there are places on this earth that had no business existing where they do. Every reason in the world said not to attempt them. Someone tried anyway, and in some cases, the difficulty seems to have been the point. The challenge itself was what gave the work its meaning. As Albert Camus once wrote:

The struggle towards the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.

Some took longer than a lifetime, which means the people who began them knew, with total certainty, that they would die before the work was done. 1. Closer to Heaven Than to Earth

In the plains of Thessaly, in central Greece, enormous pillars of sandstone rise straight out of the earth, some of them climbing more than 400 meters above the plain. They look less like rock formations than like a forest of stone, shaped over roughly sixty million years from the sediments of an ancient river delta, later split and sculpted by earthquakes and erosion into shapes that should not be able to support anything at all. On top of six of them, against every imaginable instinct, humans built monasteries that are still there today…

They are called Meteora — from the Greek meteoros, “suspended in the air” — and the name is almost literal. Monks first settled on these pinnacles from the 11th century onward, living as hermits in the caves and fissures of the rock. By the 14th century, they began building on the summits themselves, seeking solitude and refuge during the turbulent decline of the Byzantine world and the rise of Ottoman power in the region.

Between the 13th and 16th centuries, twenty-four monasteries were built on peaks that, at the time, had no stairways, no roads, and in many cases no obvious way up at all. The first and greatest, the Great Meteoron, was founded around 1356 by a monk known as Athanasios the Meteorite, and it remains the largest of them all. In 1988, UNESCO inscribed Meteora as a World Heritage Site, noting that the monasteries were built “despite incredible difficulties.”

The phrase is an understatement. Until the early twentieth century, the only way to reach most of the monasteries was to be hoisted up the sheer cliff face in a net, pulled by hand on a rope wound around a wooden winch by the monks above. Building materials, food, supplies, and people all arrived the same way, swinging in the open air, hundreds of meters above the ground. The monks themselves climbed by long, removable wooden ladders that they drew up behind them.

A visiting traveler once asked how often they replaced the ropes that hoisted people up. The reply, as the story goes, was that they replaced them only when they broke.

Today, narrow staircases carved into the stone in the 1920s make the six surviving monasteries accessible to visitors. But standing at the foot of one of those pillars and looking up — at a small church balanced on a peak the wind has been polishing for sixty million years — the wonder is no longer about how. It is about what kind of soul looks at the impossible and decides that is where home should be…

Painting is poetry which is seen and not heard, and poetry is a painting which is heard but not seen. These two arts, you may call them both either poetry or painting, have here interchanged the senses by which they penetrate to the intellect.

We live in an age of almost unimaginable achievement. We have split the atom, sequenced the genome, built telescopes that can see light from the first galaxies that ever formed. And yet a person can still walk into a gallery, stand in front of a panel painted five or six centuries ago, and feel something the modern world rarely produces: the sensation of looking at a piece of art that should not be possible. There are paintings that test not only what we see, but what we believe we are seeing…

That is the strange power of this art form. At its best, painting is an act of beautiful deception: an invitation to accept a few lines and shapes, made with color and a brush, as a living world. Instead of imitating reality, the greatest painters set out to challenge it. And in a handful of extraordinary cases, they produced things that still baffle us today: a trick of perspective, an illusion stretched across a ceiling, a reflection in an eye, rendered with a precision that even now, with everything we know, is difficult to fully explain.

To see it, though, you have to slow down. These works do not give themselves away at a glance. The longer you look, the more they reveal, and the stranger they become. As Nietzsche once put it:

The voice of beauty speaks softly; it creeps only into the most fully awakened souls.

1. The Painting That Was Never Painted

In December of 1531, ten years after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, an indigenous man named Juan Diego was walking near the hill of Tepeyac, outside Mexico City. According to the account written down in the Nahuatl-language Nican Mopohua, he encountered a young woman, radiant as the sun, who spoke to him in his own language and identified herself as the mother of God. She asked that a church be built on the hill. The local archbishop, Juan de Zumárraga, asked for a sign.

Days later, Juan Diego opened his tilma — a cloak woven from coarse cactus fiber — to let a cascade of out-of-season roses fall to the floor. On the cloth itself, the witnesses saw an image: a dark-haired, olive-skinned woman, head bowed, hands joined in prayer.

That cloak still exists. It hangs today above the altar of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City — the most-visited Catholic shrine on earth.

And for nearly five centuries, it has resisted a simple question: who painted it?

The image has been examined again and again. In 1666, as part of a formal Church inquiry, seven professional painters studied it and testified that it seemed impossible for any human artist to have produced something so refined on fabric so rough.

In 1979, the biophysicist Philip Callahan photographed it under infrared light and reported that, in the original portions of the figure, he could detect no preparatory sketch and no visible brushstrokes. He documented numerous later additions and touch-ups, much of which had cracked or deteriorated over the centuries — but concluded that the original image, in his words, could not be explained and that after more than four hundred years it showed no fading or cracking of any kind.

The strangest aspect, however, concerns the eyes:

Beginning in 1956, ophthalmologists examining the Virgin’s eyes with magnification reported what they described as tiny human figures reflected in the corneas — and claimed these silhouettes behaved like Purkinje–Sanson images, the reflections that light naturally produces on the curved surfaces of a living human eye.

Decades later, the engineer José Aste Tonsmann, using digital image enhancement, claimed to have identified as many as thirteen figures in the eyes, which he interpreted as the scene in the bishop’s room at the moment the cloak was first opened in 1531.

It is important to be honest about all of this. Not every examination has reached the same conclusion. A 1982 study by José Sol Rosales, for instance, found that the image had been painted with ordinary sixteenth-century materials and techniques. And there is an older complication still: in 1556, just twenty-five years after the apparition, a senior Franciscan friar named Francisco de Bustamante delivered a furious public sermon in Mexico City, in which he stated plainly that it had been painted — “the work of an Indian painter,” he said, naming a native artist called Marcos.

The image has, in other words, been contested almost since the moment it first appeared.

But that is exactly what makes the tilma so extraordinary. It has survived nearly five centuries of candle smoke, incense, humidity, and a nitric acid spill in the late 1700s. It also endured a bomb detonated directly beneath it in 1921, which bent a brass crucifix and shattered marble, yet left the cloth itself completely untouched. It is one of the most examined images in human history — and after five hundred years, the examinations still do not agree. Whatever you believe about how it came to exist, the tilma remains a masterpiece that has never fully surrendered its secrets…

2. The Skull That Hides in Plain Sight

In 1533, the German painter Hans Holbein the Younger completed a double portrait of two young Frenchmen: Jean de Dinteville, the French ambassador to the court of Henry VIII, and Georges de Selve, the Bishop of Lavaur. The painting, known simply as The Ambassadors, now hangs in the National Gallery in London.

At first glance, it is a triumph of pure technical realism. The longer you look, the harder that triumph becomes to comprehend…

Holbein renders fabric the way a modern camera renders it. The black satin, the pink silk, the white fur lining, the soft individual hairs of the two men’s beards — each surface has its own distinct weight and sheen.

But the two ambassadors are not really the heart of the painting. The heart of it is the shelf between them, and Holbein paints every object on it with the precision of a scientific instrument-maker. On the upper level are the tools of the celestial realm: a celestial globe, a sundial, a torquetum and other astronomical instruments. On the lower level are the objects of the earthly one: a terrestrial globe, a lute, a case of flutes, an open hymn book, a book of arithmetic.

Each is rendered so exactly that scholars have been able to identify the arithmetic text as a real published manual by the German astronomer Peter Apian and even locate, on the terrestrial globe, the position of Dinteville’s own château at Polisy. The objects are a portrait in their own right — a display of everything these two men have measured, mastered, and understood.

But Holbein’s cleverness runs deeper than display. Look closely at the lute, and you will see that one of its strings is broken — a symbol of discord, of something fractured. The hymn book beside it is open to a translation by Martin Luther: the painting was made as the Protestant Reformation was tearing Europe in two, and Holbein lets the tension whisper through the objects rather than state it.

And there, half-hidden behind the green curtain in the upper left corner, almost lost, is a small silver crucifix. The placement is deliberate. For all the human power gathered on that shelf — the ability to chart the heavens and map the earth — the painting suggests that true meaning lies outside it, in something the instruments cannot measure.

And then there is the thing that, at first, you cannot see at all.

Stretched diagonally across the floor at the men’s feet is a strange, pale, smeared shape. From directly in front of the artwork, it looks like a flaw, a blur, something gone wrong. It is not. It is a human skull, painted in anamorphic perspective — a distortion so extreme that the image only resolves into its true form when the viewer stands close to the painting and looks at it from a sharp angle to the right.

There is a genius in this beyond the technical feat. We cannot see the skull at first — just as we spend our lives not quite able to see, or accept, the transience of everything we are looking at.

Holbein painted earthly reality so vividly that we refuse to believe it is only pigment, and then hid death inside it, in plain sight, waiting for each viewer to step to the side and find what was there all along…

3. A Painting Full of Other Paintings

Around the year 1620, an unknown Flemish artist painted something astonishing. The work, housed in London’s National Gallery, is called Cognoscenti in a Room hung with Pictures. At first it looks straightforward: eleven elegantly dressed men — connoisseurs, collectors, dealers, the cognoscenti of the title — stand in a vast room, inspecting and discussing art.

But look closer at the walls and zoom in…

The room is crowded, floor to ceiling, with dozens of paintings, sculptures, prints, and astronomical instruments. And nearly every one of them is a meticulous miniature reproduction of a real, identifiable work of art by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century masters, most of them active in Antwerp.

The artist painted, by hand, a gallery’s worth of other artists’ paintings in perfect miniature — each with its own composition, its own subject, its own style faithfully copied, all within a single canvas. It is a painting that contains an entire museum.

And on the windowsill, almost hidden, the artist placed a small monkey — a traditional symbol of human folly and a reminder of how foolish it is to spend your life chasing the ownership of expensive things, while missing the bigger picture.

4. This Mirror Reflects the Whole Room

In 1434, the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck completed a small oil painting, barely 80 centimeters tall, that would become one of the most studied works of art ever made. It is known as The Arnolfini Portrait, and it is also part of the collection at the National Gallery. It shows a richly dressed couple — most likely the Italian merchant Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife — standing together in a private room in the city of Bruges.

What makes the painting extraordinary is van Eyck’s command of oil paint, a medium he helped pioneer. Working with translucent layer upon translucent layer, he achieved a level of detail that, in 1434, simply did not exist anywhere else in European art. Every surface in the room is rendered with almost unsettling precision: the soft fur trimming the clothing, the brass of the elaborate chandelier with its single lit candle, the oranges by the window — a luxury import, painted so convincingly you can sense their weight.

Van Eyck signed the work not in a corner, but boldly on the back wall, in elegant script: Johannes de eyck fuit hic 1434 — “Jan van Eyck was here. 1434.”

But the heart of the painting — and the detail that has astonished viewers for almost six hundred years — is the convex mirror on the back wall.

It is small, round, and at first easy to overlook…

Its curved glass reflects the entire room in miniature — the backs of the couple, the windows, the ceiling beams, the whole space compressed into a sphere a few centimeters across. And it does not stop there. In the mirror, you can see two more figures, people standing roughly where you, the viewer, are standing, entering the room through a door that is not otherwise visible.

One of them may be van Eyck himself.

The wooden frame around the mirror is studded with ten tiny scenes from the Passion of Christ — and each of those scenes, painted in a space barely a centimeter and a half wide, is still individually recognizable.

Van Eyck painted a mirror, inside a painting, that reflects a world larger than the painting itself, and he did it nearly six centuries ago, with a mastery of oil paint that no-one alive could yet match.

5. A Ceiling That Opens Into the Sky

When the Jesuit Church of Sant’Ignazio in Rome was being completed in the seventeenth century, it was meant to be crowned with a magnificent dome. The money ran out. The dome was never built, leaving a flat, empty ceiling where the grandest feature of the church should have been.

So the Jesuits turned to Andrea Pozzo — a lay brother of the order, a painter, and a master of mathematical perspective. Between 1685 and 1694, Pozzo solved the problem in the most audacious way imaginable. He simply painted the dome. On a flat canvas, using nothing but perspective, light, and shadow, he created the illusion of a soaring ribbed cupola opening into the sky above the church — complete with curving architecture, receding columns, and streaming light.

Stand on the small marble disc set into the floor of the nave, look up, and the dome is there: deep, three-dimensional, utterly convincing.

Then walk forward: as you move away from that one marked spot, the illusion begins to warp, and when you stand directly beneath it, the dome collapses entirely into what it always was — a flat painting on a flat ceiling.mo

Pozzo did the same with the nave ceiling itself, painting the whole vault as though the roof of the church had dissolved and figures were rising endlessly into heaven.

It is one of the greatest optical illusions ever committed to paint: an entire piece of architecture that exists only in two dimensions, and only from the right point of view.

6. This Painting Is Looking at You

In 1656, the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez completed a canvas that would become, in the centuries since, perhaps the most analyzed painting in the entire history of Western art. It is called Las Meninas — Spanish for “the ladies-in-waiting” — and it is displayed at Museo del Prado in Madrid.

It is enormous: 318 by 276 centimeters, which means the figures inside it are nearly life-size and the canvas portrayed within the painting is about the same size as Las Meninas itself. Standing before it feels less like looking at an artwork than like looking through a doorway into a room that happens to exist in 1656.

At the center stands the five-year-old Infanta Margarita Teresa, daughter of King Philip IV. She is surrounded by a small crowd: two meninas attending to her, two court dwarfs, a chaperone, a bodyguard, a large dog dozing in the foreground.

A man pauses on a staircase in a lit doorway at the back, and a delicate brushstroke beside him adds a gentle glow, enriching the depth of the composition.

And on the far left, standing before an enormous canvas turned away from us, is Velázquez himself — brush in one hand, palette in the other — in the act of painting. It was an extraordinarily bold thing to do in the seventeenth century: to insert your own self-portrait, at full height, into a royal commission, mingling your own likeness with that of the king’s family.

The painter's chest bears the red cross of the Order of Santiago, which he received years after this masterpiece was finished. According to Palomino — known as the “Spanish Vasari” — the king ordered this to be added after his death, “and some say that his Majesty himself painted it”.

And then there is the mirror…

On the rear wall, between the figures, hangs a small mirror, glowing softly with reflected light. Look into it, and the entire painting silently reorganizes itself around you. The mirror reflects two people who appear nowhere else in the scene: King Philip IV and Queen Mariana. They are standing precisely where you, the viewer, are standing. Which means the empty space in front of the canvas — your space — is not empty at all. You are occupying the position of the king and queen of Spain. Everyone in that room who is looking out at “you” is in fact looking at the monarchs.

The painting is, by the way, the only known double portrait of the royal couple Velázquez ever made — and they appear in it only as a reflection, a few centimeters wide, on a distant wall.

Velázquez built a picture with no fixed center and no settled meaning — a picture that watches the person watching it, that folds the viewer bodily into its own subject, and that turns a simple court portrait into an endless loop of looking. For nearly four centuries, scholars, philosophers, and painters have stood in front of it and tried to pin down exactly what they are seeing. But they have never fully succeeded…

Salvador Dalí once said:

I’m a very bad painter. To be a good painter you’ve got to be a bit stupid, with the exception of Velázquez, who is a genius, whose talent surpasses the art of painting.

We tend to believe that progress moves in a single direction — that the present always knows more, sees more, can do more than the past. And in so many ways it does. But beauty has never obeyed that rule. These works were made by people with no machines to do the difficult part for them, only pigment, patience, and an unreasonable refusal to accept what a flat surface was supposed to be capable of.

We live quickly now. We glance, and we move on. But these paintings cannot be received that way, and they never could. They ask for the one thing we rarely offer anymore: our stillness. And in that stillness, something extraordinary happens. A stranger who is long gone, and you, who are here, meet for a moment that transcends the centuries between you. Go and stand in front of a painting this weekend, if you can. Wait there, patiently, long enough to be met by the human being who traded their time on earth to leave a little beauty behind…

On the morning of 21 July 1798, leading his army into battle near the pyramids of Giza, Napoleon Bonaparte turned to his troops and said:

From the heights of these pyramids, forty centuries look down on us.

Even Napoleon, a man not known for being easily humbled, could not stand in front of the Giza plateau and feel anything but small…

Anyone who has been there knows the feeling. The pyramids overwhelm you. And as you look at them, a question forms in the back of your mind that nobody has ever entirely answered: how did this happen? How did a civilization capable of producing structures so enormous, so geometrically precise, so engineered for permanence, appear in the Nile Valley thousands of years before anything comparable existed anywhere else on earth?

The Great Pyramid alone stood as the tallest man-made structure on earth for millennia, and experts who have studied it across entire careers often admit that what the Egyptians accomplished — without modern machines, without iron, without the wheel as we use it today — remains genuinely difficult to grasp.

And the strangeness does not stop at the pyramids. Across thousands of years, they produced a long catalogue of objects, monuments, and astonishing feats of engineering. Mainstream Egyptology has plausible explanations for most of them: ramps, sledges, copper chisels, dolerite hammers, organized labor, and enormous spans of time. These explanations work for much of what survives. But against the scale and precision of certain works, they still leave us with more questions than full answers.

A civilization working with copper tools and rope produced things that even modern engineers, with diamond saws and industrial cranes, describe as remarkable. You do not need to reach for anything beyond the evidence to be in awe of what they were able to bring into the world.

As the American Egyptologist Mark Lehner — one of the foremost living authorities on Giza — has written:

We think of the pyramids as mysteries, but the stones, hieroglyphs, landscapes, and even layers of sands and debris around them hold stories.

1. The Wonder That Surpassed the Pyramids

While we still wait to see whether the recent claims by Italian researcher Filippo Biondi about massive underground structures beneath the Giza Plateau hold up under scrutiny — most archaeologists remain deeply skeptical, and the work has yet to be peer-reviewed — the debate itself highlights something important.

We know for a fact that the Egyptians built extraordinary underground complexes, and that they impressed the ancients just as much as they impress us today.

In the fifth century BC, the Greek historian Herodotus — often called the father of history — traveled to Egypt and saw something that left him struggling for words…

He had already seen the pyramids of Giza. He had talked about them in detail. And yet, on the same journey, he came across a single building so vast and so confounding that he described it as the greatest architectural achievement of all time:

I have seen it myself, and I found it greater than words can say. For if one should put together all the buildings produced by the Hellenes, they would prove to be inferior in labour and expense to this labyrinth. Though the pyramids beggar description, this maze surpasses even the pyramids. […] The Egyptian caretakers would by no means show us the underground chambers, as they were, they said, the burial vaults of the kings who first built it. The upper we saw for ourselves, and they are creations greater than human.

He was talking about the Labyrinth of Hawara, built south of Amenemhat III’s pyramid. According to Herodotus, the structure contained 3,000 rooms — 1,500 above ground and 1,500 below — arranged across twelve roofed courts, surrounded by a single outer wall, with passageways so confusing that visitors could not move through it without a guide.

Two centuries later, the Greek geographer Strabo visited the same building and described immense colonnades, a “great palace made up of many palaces”, and massive chambers, each one roofed with a single colossal stone — no timber, no smaller blocks, just enormous slabs spanning the entire width of each room.

Other ancient writers all referenced the Labyrinth across the centuries that followed. It is mentioned in at least six classical sources. In the 1st century BC, Diodorus Siculus made the following claim:

They left no room for their successors to surpass them. For, when one had entered the sacred enclosure, one found a temple surrounded by columns, 40 to each side, and this building had a roof made of a single stone.

To understand why this matters, imagine what it would mean to do this today. Moving and lifting a single stone slab large enough to roof an entire room is a very serious undertaking. Doing it hundreds of times, with such precision that the slabs sat perfectly flush against the walls and held their own weight without internal supports, would be a logistical challenge of extraordinary complexity even now.

Yet they did it so many times, in a single building, that ancient Greek visitors — who had seen the great temples of the Mediterranean world — wrote that what they had stood inside at Hawara was a work that surpassed the pyramids themselves, and anything their own civilization had produced.

The labyrinth’s construction has been attributed to Amenemhat III, who ruled in 1800 BC. Yet, in Naturalis Historia, Pliny the Elder wrote:

There is still in Egypt a labyrinth, which was the first constructed, three thousand six hundred years ago, they say, by King Petesuchis or Tithöes.

What makes this passage almost surreal is the math. Pliny was writing in the first century AD. “Three thousand six hundred years ago” places the original construction of the Labyrinth somewhere around 3,500 BC, in the late Predynastic period — long before Egypt was even a unified state, and nearly a millennium before modern archaeology dates the pyramids of Giza.

And then, slowly, the Labyrinth disappeared from history.

By the time European Egyptology emerged in the 19th century, it had already become a distant memory. Flinders Petrie excavated the site at Hawara in 1888. He uncovered the outline of an enormous rectangular structure — over 300 meters long and 244 meters wide — and concluded he was looking at the foundation slab of the long-vanished Labyrinth, the rest of which had been quarried away in antiquity for use as building material elsewhere. There is now reason to believe he had it the wrong way around. He was not standing on the floor of the Labyrinth. He was standing on its roof…

For more than a century his interpretation remained largely unchallenged. Until 2008.

That year, the Mataha Expedition — an Egyptian–Belgian collaboration between the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics in Cairo and Ghent University — conducted a ground-penetrating radar survey of the area south of the Amenemhat III pyramid. What they detected, several meters below the sand, was a grid of vertical structures, several meters thick, consistent with a network of nearly closed rooms at depths of 8 to 12 meters.

A subsequent 2023 study by Mark Carlotto, using space-based synthetic aperture radar, detected anomalies in the same area that aligned with the Mataha findings. Whether or not part of the structure Herodotus described still survives below the surface, the geophysical evidence has changed what scholars believe may still be recoverable about the Labyrinth.

There is, however, one major obstacle standing in the way of uncovering the site: in the late 1820s, a canal known as the Bahr Selah was cut through the southeast corner of the Labyrinth complex, and water has been seeping into the underground chambers ever since.

The Egyptian government has not authorized further excavation. The data exists. The structure, by every available indication, is still down there. And the most accurate description we have of it remains the one written by a Greek historian 2500 years ago — a man who saw it with his own eyes and described it as the single greatest wonder of the ancient world…

2. The Largest Stone Statue in History

In the ruins of an ancient Egyptian temple lies the foot of a shattered statue carved from a single block of red granite, whose true scale, once reconstructed, goes beyond what we thought this civilization was capable of.

In a letter dated September 1537, the poet Pietro Aretino wrote:

The world has many kings, but only one Michelangelo.

Many today still consider him the greatest artist of all time. The archetypal Renaissance man — a sculptor, a painter, an architect, a poet — who seemed to operate at a level his contemporaries could not even properly describe.

Already in his lifetime, they called him Il Divino, the divine one. Art historians ever since have used another word, terribilità, to describe what he produced: the particular quality of an artwork so overwhelming that it provokes not admiration but awe, the sense of standing before something that should not be possible.

There is no work in which this quality is more directly experienced than the David.

Anyone who has ever stood in front of it in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence knows exactly what terribilità means. There is no photograph that prepares you for it...

Michelangelo received the commission in August 1501, when he was twenty-six years old. He finished it in three years, working in such secrecy that wooden planks were built around the block to keep anyone from seeing the work in progress.

When the statue was finally unveiled in September 1504, his contemporary Giorgio Vasari, the father of art history, wrote that Michelangelo had “surpassed all ancient and modern statues, whether Greek or Latin, that have ever existed.”

Five centuries later, the Italian art critic Vittorio Sgarbi has spoken about his art in language that few modern critics would dare to use:

If an artist like Michelangelo exists, it means that God exists. In his work, he seems to enter into a direct dialogue with the divine.

That may sound like hyperbole — but the 5 details you are about to see will show you why it isn’t. That a single human being is responsible for all of them is something almost impossible to comprehend. Perhaps the closest thing to an answer was given by Michelangelo himself, when he said this about his own work:

In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.

1. The Vein That Anticipated Science by a Century

In December 2019, Dr. Daniel Gelfman, a cardiologist and clinical professor at the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, published a short paper in JAMA Cardiology, one of the most respected medical journals in the world. He titled it “The David Sign.” It described a detail he had noticed while visiting the Galleria dell’Accademia — a detail that, in his words, had been “hiding in plain sight for more than 500 years.”

What Gelfman had seen, with the trained eye of a heart specialist, was that the external jugular vein on the right side of David’s neck is clearly distended — visibly raised above the collarbone, exactly as it would appear on a real human being in a state of intense physical excitement.

In ordinary anatomy, this vein is not normally visible. It only stands out under specific physiological conditions: extreme stress, intense exertion, or heightened cardiovascular activity. In other words, exactly the state a young man would be in moments before facing a giant.

This is where the discovery becomes extraordinary. The mechanics of the human circulatory system — how blood actually flows back to the heart through the venous system — were not formally described in medical science until 1628, when the English physician William Harvey published his treatise De Motu Cordis. Michelangelo finished David in 1504. He was depicting, with anatomical precision, a circulatory phenomenon that science would not understand for another 124 years.

“Michelangelo, like some of his artistic contemporaries, had anatomical training,” Gelfman wrote in his paper. “I realized that he must have noticed temporary jugular venous distension in healthy individuals who are excited.”

He had. The marble had been telling us for five centuries before a doctor finally noticed…

2. Manu Fortis

Look at David’s right hand. It is, anatomically speaking, too big for his body. The proportion is wrong. Every casual observer who has stood in front of the statue and looked carefully has noticed it.

There are two reasons for this — and both reveal something about Michelangelo’s mind.

The first is practical. David was originally commissioned in 1501 as one of twelve statues of prophets to be installed along the roofline of the Florence Cathedral, roughly 80 meters above the ground.

Michelangelo sculpted the statue knowing it would be viewed from far below, and he deliberately enlarged the head, the hands, and certain other features to compensate for the foreshortening that distance would create.

When the statue was finally completed, however, a commission of the most prominent artists of the age decided it was simply too beautiful to be hidden 80 meters in the air. They placed it instead in the public square in front of the Palazzo della Signoria, where it was unveiled on 8 September 1504. It stood there for 369 years, until it was finally moved indoors in 1873.

The second reason is symbolic. In the Middle Ages, the biblical David was known by the Latin epithet manu fortis — strong of hand. It was a reference to the divine power that flowed through him when he faced Goliath: the strength of God, made visible in the body of a young shepherd boy. Michelangelo carved that nickname directly into the marble. The hand is large because David’s hand, in the story, was the instrument of the impossible.

But none of this prepares you for what that hand actually looks like up close…

Stand below it and you will see veins that rise beneath the surface of the stone the way veins rise beneath skin under tension. It is the hand of a real man, in a real moment, captured with such precision that you find yourself looking — almost involuntarily — for a pulse.

And then you remember that what made all this possible was a damaged block of marble that two other sculptors had given up on. Agostino di Duccio in 1464, Antonio Rossellino in 1475 — both abandoned it because it was too flawed to be worked with. The block sat outside in the cathedral yard for over thirty years before Michelangelo arrived. The slim figure of the David, the slightly sideways gaze, the narrow stance — all of these were dictated by the limitations of a stone no one else thought could be saved.

And then Michelangelo freed David from a piece of rock the rest of the world had given up on…

3. Two Hearts, Hidden in Plain Sight

Look closely at David’s eyes — closely enough to forget for a moment the image you already know. Look only at the pupils.

They are not circles. They are hearts.

Most statues use a simple vertical slit in the pupil to give the eye depth and catch the light. David’s pupils are unmistakably heart-shaped.

Some have suggested it was a play on the letter D, often written as a heart shape in Renaissance Italy. A more technical reading holds that it was a sculptural device designed to catch light from below and create the illusion of a moist, living eye — since the statue was originally meant to be viewed from far beneath.

There is something else hidden in those eyes that no one noticed for a very long time. In 2005, an article published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, based on data from Stanford University’s Digital Michelangelo Project, revealed that David is slightly cross-eyed. His right eye gazes straight ahead. His left eye is focused on a different, more distant point.

The reason this had escaped notice for half a millennium is simple: most viewers are physically unable to examine the David at eye level, since he stands more than five meters above the floor. From below, the asymmetry is invisible. Only the high-resolution 3D scans of Stanford’s project finally exposed it.

Why Michelangelo did this is something scholars are still debating.

What is no longer in doubt is that the eyes are not just open... They are watching.

4. The One Imperfection He Could Not Hide

Walk around to the back of the David and look at the right side of his back, between the shoulder blade and the spine. There, where the right infraspinatus muscle should be — one of the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff — there is nothing. The muscle is missing.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has noted this anomaly, and modern shoulder specialists who study the statue all see it immediately.

But Michelangelo knew...

In one of his own letters, he wrote that there was a defect in the block of marble that prevented him from reproducing the muscle. He could not have hidden it. He could only acknowledge it.

The reason this matters is that Michelangelo, alongside Leonardo da Vinci, was one of the most rigorous students of human anatomy of his age. He began dissecting corpses at the age of seventeen, when the prior of Santo Spirito in Florence granted him access to bodies awaiting burial. The practice would continue, intensively, for over a decade.

He knew the body better than almost anyone alive. The only thing missing from his David is what the stone would not let him reach.

5. A Soul Trapped in Marble

Forget for a moment the body, the hand, the proportions. Look only at the brow, the eyes, the deep furrow between them.

This does not look like something a man carved out of stone. It looks like something alive. As if Michelangelo had not sculpted David at all, but caught the soul of someone real and let it settle inside the marble, where it has been looking back at us, century after century, ever since.

At 5.17 meters tall — roughly the height of a two-story building — David was not only the first colossal marble statue of the High Renaissance, but the largest since classical antiquity.

When the work was finally finished they had to tear down the archway of Michelangelo’s workshop to get the statue out, as recorded by the Florentine chronicler Luca Landucci. It then took 40 men, 4 days, and 14 greased logs to move it half a mile to the Piazza della Signoria.

The engraving below shows the David being moved again from the Piazza in 1873:

Today, in the Galleria dell’Accademia, the statue is dusted regularly by hand.

The photographs of restorers standing on small platforms next to him, leaning in to clean his hair, are the only images that give you any honest sense of his scale. And it is in those photographs that the impossibility of what Michelangelo did finally lands: the fact that a single human being, alone, produced a sculpture this enormous and this perfect.

Just as Sandro Botticelli’s Venus is regarded as the epitome of female beauty in art, Michelangelo’s David is seen as the ideal representation of the male form — and many scholars today still consider it the most beautiful work of art ever created by man.

There is, perhaps, no better way to close this piece than with the words of Vasari, who stood in the Piazza della Signoria the day the David was unveiled. After everything we have just seen, what he wrote no longer sounds like exaggeration:

It was a miracle that Michelangelo was able to raise up one who had died.
