James
Lucas, unlike many younger artists, uses the computer as an extension
of traditional tools. After completing his degree at San Jose State University,
he moved to New Jersey, where he creates his images on the computer then
meticulously transfers the digital image onto canvas.James’ paintings are powerful and show a strong demonstration of elegant reductive form. James’ theory is based on a fundamental field/ ground relationship. Slightly imitating silkscreen’s nature, his portraits are all color ground and line quality, wherever the light hits creates color. The figure is a separate entity because the background creates it to be more of a tangible form. James’ pure color has simulated Jackson Pollack’s "Action Paintings" technique with a free meditative dropping of paint. The juxtaposition of the "real" figure against the faux background creates a tension similar to the te nsion created by Kandinski. Matisse created the sensation of form with flat fields of color. James too has created fields of color into the essence of forms. Unlike most natural painters he uses black as his strongest form, the form that holds the painting together. James has had shows in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Japan, and the Republic of Kazakhstan. James also painted a collection of signed celebrity portraits, including Tim Allen, Jerry Lewis, Diane Sawyer, Robin Williams and over 90 other stars. |
